The remains of a contemporary wrapper are attached along the spine but lacking otherwise. The remaining paper cover is lined with part of a page of a German-language book. Several ink notations in the lower margins indicating that this belonged to David Beidleman of Mifflin Town Mifflintown Pa. A few ink corrections of errors. A translation of Verbesserte und Erleichterte Lateinische Grammatica by Johann Joachim Lange 1670-1744 a German Protestant theologian. The year prior to this publication the same printer Christoph Riegels seel. Wittib had issued a 96-page French edition of the work: Dialogues de Feu Monsieur Lang Traduits du Latin Avec les Mots et Phrases de Chaque Dialogue: pour l'Usage des Jeunes Gens. In 1769 an English translation was published in London by Edward and Charles Dilly under the title: Easy and Pleasant Latin Conversations or One Hundred and Forty-four Dialogues on Common Subjects Morals and the First Part of the Roman History. The edition offered here was intended to help German speakers learn English. Unfortunately the translator John Justin Herwig had a less than perfect understanding of English. This may explain the scarcity of the item only one copy is listed on Worldcat with no physical description. The dialogues are grouped by "decades" or groups of 10 dialogues each. The final leaf of signature E is lacking and the text ends at the beginning of the 10th dialogue in the ninth decade the 9th group of 10. Presumably a final signature is also lacking which would have brought the page total to 96 which agrees with the size of the French edition issued one year earlier by the same printer. Extremely scarce and unusual 18th-century work. In Poor Condition: incomplete as described above; old soiling and dampstaining; stitching is going. Christoph Riegels seel. Wittib paperback

Includes a table with the votes in the Senate on Nicholson's trial and an alphabetical index of the letters official documents witnesses names of the speakers and other occurrences in the two trials. Inscription on front fixed endpaper covered by bookplate of the Belles Lettres Society of Dickinson College indicating that this was presented to the Society by Joshua Hoover in 1827. Written in pencil on front free endpaper: "Joshua Brinkle." Oval stamp of Dickinson College Library on both front endpapers. On the title page "J. P. Brinckle" is crossed out and "Kemp Roberts" written below. Francis Hopkinson 1737-1791 a Signer of the Declaration of Independence and composer was tried in 1780 on charges of accepting bribes; he was acquitted. John Nicholson d. 1800 financier Comptroller General of Pennsylvania and land speculator was charged with financial irregularities in 1793; he was acquitted. In Good Condition: loss of leather at ends of spine and in the middle of the spine including from the spine label; tear from fore-edge across pp. 55-56 without loss of text; light foxing; otherwise clean and solid. 17760087821776. Near Fine -. 1 handwritten document of 4 pages 39 x 25 cm. folded. On 12 Dec. 1776 William Rowan of Fawn Township York Co. Pa. yeoman mortgaged 245 acres in Fawn Township to Beulah Paschall of the city of Philadelphia spinster for 300 pounds of Pennsylvania due by 12 Dec. 1783 with interest paid yearly. Signed by William Rowan; witnesses Peter Miller and Abraham Shoemaker; Philadelphia Supreme Court Justice Thomas Willing; and York County Recorder Samuel Johnston. Embossed paper stamp of Pennsylvania. The mortgagee was Beulah Paschall 1732-1793 a Philadelphia Quaker and owner of Cedar Grove. Thomas Willing 1731-1821 was a highly successful merchant and real estate developer as well as a Philadelphia Supreme Court Justice from 1767 to 1776. He served as the first president of both the Bank of North America and the Bank of the United States and supported the American Revolution. York County Recorder Samuel Johnston on the other hand had come to York County from England as an official representative of the Penn family. He held a variety of county offices at various times in addition to that of recorder of deeds: clerk of courts prothonotary and register of wills. When he refused to take the oaths of allegiance to Pennsylvania during the Revolution he had to relinquish all public offices. However he did not opposed the Revolution. Two of his sons-in-law served as colonels in the American militia and two of his sons were privates. By 1786 Johnston lived in Maryland and was admitted as an attorny in Baltimore County. Lacking first 4 leaves title page and front matter. Publisher's advertisement on 4 unpaginated pages following text for "W. M'Culloch printer bookseller and stationer No. 306 Market near Ninth-Street Philadelphia." Although lacking title page this first and perhaps only issue of this religious periodical was definitely published by W. M'Culloch William McCulloch as p. 19 contains a letter addressed to "Mr. M'Culloch" regarding the insertion of a letter in "your first number" of his "Christian Magazine." Not in Early American Imprints 1st series Shaw & Shoemaker. No other copies of this publication have been located. It is not known whether there is any connection to the publication of same name begun in Edinburgh 1797. Although his work as a printer is not well-documented in Early American Imprints Evans or Shaw & Shoemaker this is the William McCulloch of "William McCulloch's Additions to Thomas's History of Printing." Contents: On the Gospel by Eubulus; The Extent of a Minister's Work in Preaching the Gospel by Beart; Observations on the Manner of Travelling in the Holy Land from Harmer; On Christian Hope by Benevolus; Extract from a letter from the Rev. First publication of Mason and Dixon’s landmark geodetic paper: “Observations for Determining the Length of a Degree of Latitude in the Provinces of Maryland and Pennsylvania in North America†pp. 274–328. This is the second and most mathematically rigorous of their published contributions detailing pendulum experiments zenith sector readings and triangulation methods used to calibrate the colonial boundary line—now known as the Mason-Dixon Line.<br /> <br /> The present volume includes another paper by Mason and Dixon on astronomical observations for calibration of the Royal Society's astronomical clock used in their survey. Together these papers document the astronomical and geodetic precision underpinning the Mason-Dixon boundary survey—among the earliest applications of Enlightenment science to American territorial mapping.
