Bookseller's label on front pastedown.<br/> <br/> Account book of Atlantic trading voyages.<br/> <br/> An interesting manuscript ship's log containing financial accounts for the brigs Nimrod and Jasper for an eight year period from 1826 to 1833 while they were under the command of a Captain John Hill. The two ships made numerous voyages between the United States Europe and the Caribbean. The present log book contains line accounts of expenditures for journeys from London and Marseilles to New York and Norfolk in 1827; from Antwerp to London in 1828; from Philadelphia to the West Indies in 1829; from Madeira to the Turks Islands in 1831; from the West Indies to Pensacola to Havana in 1832; from the Indies to New York in 1833; and other similar voyages. The log also contains two copies of an 1832 letter written in Havana by Hill to merchants there inquiring about the price of molasses and a list of port charges at several major way points. A fascinating artifact of trans-Atlantic trade in the 1820s and 1830s. unknown

A very attractive copy remarkably well preserved especially considering the age published 1864 and fragility of its thin paper binding. SEE PHOTOS. NO foxing. NO underlining. NO highlighting. NO margin notes. Includes Ricord's report to Joel Parker Governor of New Jersey on the condition of the state's public schools. A substantial appendix lists reports by the various town superintendents in each of 21 counties from Atlantic to Warren. Since this report was published while the Civil War was still being fought the section on "Schools for Colored Children" may be of some interest: "There is no section of the law nor any decision of the courts that deprives colored children of the advantages of public school instruction it shall be the duty of the trustees of the several school districts to apply the money apportioned to the establishing and maintaining of free schools in which shall be taught all the children the law makes no distinction between children of one nationality or race and children of another " A fold-out chart SEE PHOTO lists 27 key education statistics for each of the state's 21 counties. For example one column records the "Number of colored children who have attended school" in each county and a statewide total 3029. Spine is titled in gilt. Comes in a custom marbled paper slipcase. Two fold-out tables. Scarce report on the affairs of the Potomac Company in 1821 as investigated by a joint commission appointed by Maryland and Virginia. Here Maryland Governor Samuel Stevens formally transmits this report to the Maryland Legislature on January 1 1823.<br /> <br /> The Potomac Company was formed in the late 18th century with the object of reengineering the Potomac River to create a navigable link from the Ohio country to the port at Georgetown George Washington was an investor and served as the Company's first president. <br /> <br /> By 1821 the Virginia-Maryland joint commission found that the Potomac Company had "incurred heavy debts which their present resources can never enable them to discharge nor is it reasonable to expect in such circumstances that they can ever effect the objects of their incorporation."<br /> <br /> Further the commission found that the Potomac Company's sluice navigation system which was heavily dependent on "floods and freshets" was impractical and that only a still-water canal with locks could provide a navigable route that could be used consistently enough to be profitable. <br /> <br /> In the wake of this report the Potomac Company announced that it could not fulfill its charter. The project was subsequently taken up by the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal Company chartered in 1825.<br /> <br /> OCLC locates 10 copies. Printed by J. Hughes unknown

This run is virtually complete see specifics below with most of the missing issues probably available directly from the Lebanon County Historical Society. Average condition is solid VG with several issues showing loose covers or chipped spines many if most issues showing only light shelf wear solid Near Fine some showing price stickers at top front cover corners indicating that they had been purchased from LCHS; all are individually sleeved in archival bags and boards for protection. Octavo single issue printed wrappers. Features the first publication of the classic tale "The Wondersmith." This story is considered an early robot story. A toyshop owner plans to massacre thousands on the Christmas holiday by supernaturally animated small toy soldiers dolls and animals with small poisoned blades. This story influenced other writers and can be seen today in popular film such as Chuckie and others. Jessica Amanda Salmonson writes in her introduction to O'Brien's works ".O'Brien is the most important figure after Poe and before Lovecraft in modern horror literature. 1813List1947Plymouth 1813. Plymouth Devon England: 21st July 1813. Folio 7 pages 13 1/8 x 8 ¼ inches duty blindstamp small ink stamp to upper inner margin of the first page two seals to the last page signed twice by Galindo. Toned some small repaired tears using reversible archival ph-neutral paper-repair tape very good to near fine. Very Good. An interesting document of privateering in the Peninsular war this ‘Public Instrument of Protest‘ documents a Portuguese captain and crew complaint in detail to an English notary. After sailing from Calcutta to Brazil and then from Rio to just outside of Lisbon their ship the 700-ton ‘Oceano’ was seized and comprehensively ransacked by a French privateer the ‘Lion’ out of Lorient. Most of the crew and passengers were offloaded onto a passing American vessel the ‘Leda’ bound for Lisbon. Meanwhile the ‘Lyon’ escorted her prize towards the nearest French port but before a friendly haven was reached they were both set upon by the brigantine HMS ‘Achates’. The ‘Lyon’ escaped but the ‘Ocean’ was captured by Commander Morrison and the ‘Achetes’. The ’Ocean’ was taken to Plymouth and moored in the Hamoaze. The remaining Portuguese crew who had been forced to remain aboard the ‘Ocean’ by the French got a message to the ‘Ocean’s Master Dn. Ignacio Joze Martins and he and the boatswain made their way to Plymouth as quickly as possible. The sworn statement presented here is in English thanks to the translation given by Francisco Martins d' Magalhaens master of a Portuguese ship “now dwelling in Plymouthâ€<br /> <br /> The ’Oceano’ sailed from Calcutta to Brazil arriving 10th February 1813. She left Rio on 4th April all was plain sailing until the afternoon of the 7th June off the Rock of Lisbon when the ‘Lion’ showed up first under false British colors then French. The fighting was fierce the privateer was driven off once but eventually the ‘Oceano’ was taken. The night of the 7th June was spent by the French ‘conveying everything Moveable and Valuable from the Ocean to the Privateer’. The ‘Leda’ the US vessel landed the majority of the ‘Ocean’s crew including the Master in Lisbon on the evening of the 9th June.Monday 14th June the ‘Lyon’ engaged in a running battle with HMS ‘Achates’ and escaped but the ‘Achates’ did capture the ‘Ocean’. Wednesday 16th June the ‘Ocean’ arrived in Plymouth under the watchful eye of the ‘Achates’. Receiving the crew’s message the Captain of the ‘Ocean’ left Lisbon for Falmouth and then Plymouth arriving on the 20th July. It measures 18" x 35" with the route of the railway; extensions and other railways also noted; other boundaries in green. All the documents creating the Company set forth in the title of the pamphlet are printed each individually numbered. The Railway as the Prospectus states "extends from Ottawa in a south easterly direction a distance of 142 miles and connects with the Central Vermont Railroad at the village of Alburgh Springs Vt. U.S.A."<br /> "The Canada Atlantic Railway CAR was a small regional railway created in 1880 by lumber baron John Rodolphus Booth. Initially planned as part of the transportation network for his vast lumber holdings the railway quickly grew into a general-purpose railway serving passengers and communities along the route. Incredible 6 page manuscript letter from a Civil War Chaplain posted at Annapolis discussing St. John's College Hospital Chapel visiting hospitals and the work of the U.S. Christian Commission in Annapolis during the war.<br /> <br /> Partial transcript: <br /> "At 2 P.M. I preached in St. Johns College Hospital Chapel & there visited some of the wards. In the evening we had preaching in the U.S.C.C. Chapel Tent which is my headquarters at College Green Barracks.Annapolis is or course a secesh town. The churches were nearly broken up by the war but now begin to look more flourishing. There is a large Episcopal Ch. here pastor of wh. is a Chaplain in hospital & a very nice sort of fellow."<br /> <br /> An unusually descriptive letter from a young man stationed at Annapolis and serving as a chaplain at the College Green Hospital Chapel. 187166Boston; Nov. 1 1871. 1871 9 pp. folio. This indenture was made the first day of November 1871 between the Atlantic and Pacific Railroad Company and Oliver Ames and Charles F. Choate. The Atlantic and Pacific was to be built from Missouri and Arkansas to the Pacific Coast. From the very beginning the Atlantic and Pacific was plagued with problems even though they had the same rights as other transcontinental railroads regarding bonds land grants etc. Ames and Choate noted bankers of railroads and other various schemes were to loan to the railroad in gold coin. The amount is left blank in this document and the document is not signed by the parties. They were to be repaid in gold coin with an annual interest rate of 6%. In addition to the indenture listed above another indenture was made with George Bigeldow and James Dixwell. 2 pp. with manuscript corrections and additions. Including a provision to enable the Atlantic and Pacific to mortgage the road. This document was written earlier and does not have nearly as many provisions as in the Ames and Choate indenture. Four years later the Atlantic and Pacific would lapse into receivership. Oliver Ames then the largest stockholder purchased 96697 acres of the road's Missouri lands. After reorganization the A & P had some life until the panic of 1893 and the spoils were then divided between the Santa Fe and Frisco. These two documents are important in understanding the financial development of this railroad. Atlantic and Pacific material is quite scarce. Oliver Ames was the brother of Oakes. This railroad was to have been a very important development for Arkansas and Missouri. These documents are housed in a very attractive folding box 9 x 7 3/4 inches with green cloth-covered boards and a green morocco spine label with gilt lettering. 3214013 OG2080. 1st Edition. This report is part of a lengthy and complicated matter involving a Revolutionary War privateer Gideon Olmstead who fought for over three decades for a larger share of a British ship taken during the war and Elizabeth Sergeant & Esther Waters the daughters and heirs of David Rittenhouse Pennsylvania's treasurer during the Revolution. Rittenhouse had been charged with protecting the prize money until the matter was resolved. However even after federal courts ruled in favor of Olmstead Pennsylvania refused to relinquish its claim to the money. In 1809 the United States Supreme Court in U.S. v. Peters 9 U.S. 5 Cranch 115 1809 in a nationalistic Marshall Court decision made it the first case to strike down a state statute. In response Gov. Snyder ordered the militia "to protect the daughters of Rittenhouse" who lived in adjoining houses at Arch and 7th Streets which they did for five weeks in March and April 1809. When the U.S. Marshal John Smith tried to serve the writ he was stopped by crossed bayonets. After he entered Sergeant's house through a rear window and arrested her Gov. Snyder finally paid the sum to the marshal striking a blow to the doctrine of state supremacy. This report relates to the unsuccessful attempt to force the marshall to release Elizabeth Sergeant Pennsylvania Chief Justice William Tilghman ruling that although he thought he had the power to discharge them if the federal court did not have jurisdiction he determined that in this case the federal court did have jurisdiction and so she should remain in custody of the U.S. marshall. A very scarce early 19th-century American legal report. In Very Good- Condition: disbound; scattered foxing and soiling first several leaves are the most heavily foxed; trimmed too closely at the foot of p. 39 with slight loss of text; old dampstain along upper edge of some leaves. Gould's Voyage. Outer folded map panel is age toned and has a mended edge tear. In 1833 Gould sailed abroad the Commerce for Canton via Cape Horn and Valparaiso. He departed the ship in Chile and returned to New York via Rio de Janeiro on the Falmouth. He later returned to Rio on board the Iwanowna. Printed for private circulation only.
