Codice Atlantico (Codex Atlanticus). Giunti, Barbera, Firenze, 1976. Condizioni ottime.

186543889London: Bacon & Co 1865.
Atlantic Cable. The Atlantic Telegraph. Printed broadside with hand-colored wood-engraved illustrations. London: Bacon & Co. 1865. 83.6 x 58 cm. Two horizontal folds reinforced on verso a few tiny lacunae slightly affecting a few words marginal tear repaired minor soiling but very good. Matted.

A superb and amazingly detailed broadside commemorating the second attempt to lay the Atlantic Cable issued by the Atlantic Telegraph Company one of the sponsors of the venture. The first Atlantic Cable laid in 1858 had ceased transmitting shortly afterwards; a subsequent investigation by the British government uncovered the design flaws in the cable and transmitting system and took steps to correct them based on the recommendations of physicist William Thomson later Lord Kelvin. In 1865 the second Atlantic Cable voyage was launched this time aboard Isambard Kingdom Brunel's enormous steamship Great Eastern which was the only vessel capable of transporting the extremely heavy cable and installation machinery. Unfortunately the cable snapped and sank two-thirds of the way through but the following year a third Atlantic Cable venture was successful: A new cable was laid and the cable lost the previous year was grappled for and recovered. Rapid and reliable communication between North America and Europe was finally possible.

The present broadside issued around the time of the Great Eastern's departure from Valentia Ireland the Atlantic Cable's eastern anchor in 1865 contains a wealth of detail about the Atlantic Cable's history development and technological features as well as information on the history and theory of telegraphy proposed submarine cable routes and the machinery used to lay the cable. At the center of the broadside is a large image of the Great Eastern with a smaller cutaway view below; a map showing the routes of the Atlantic Cable and other submarine cables is at the top and framing the broadside are exact-size images of the 1858 and 1865 cables.
. The finest novel of the Royal Navy in WWII and a maritime classic. The story, based upon the author's own experiences [see 'Chronicles' below] , forms the basis of Charles Frend's notable feature film starring Jack Hawkins in one of his most memorable roles. So accurate is its depiction of the Battle of the Atlantic that it is one of the very few works of fiction admitted by Law to his standard bibliography 'The Royal Navy in World War Two'. Law, 1865. Monsarrat's 'WWII Chronicles', arguably the definitive record of corvette service in WWII, are the basis of the novel. The set comprises 'HM Corvette' (1942), 'East Coast Corvette' (1943), 'Corvette Command' (1944) and 'HM Frigate' (1946). The first three volumes were combined and issued in slightly abridged form as 'Three Corvettes' (1945). Taken together and in sequence the four volumes provide a near-continuous record of Monsarrat's own wartime service. Furthermore they contain much of the inspiration and context, and in several cases actual incidents which reappear in the author's masterpiece 'The Cruel Sea' (1951), arguably the finest novel of the Royal Navy in WWII. Monsarrat's seatime began in HMS Campanula [broadly the 'HMS Flower' of the first volume] on the North Atlantic convoys; at one time she was the only RN vessel operating out of St. Johns. She is perhaps best known for her service in convoy OG71 (Milford Haven-Gibraltar, August 1941) which suffered so badly at the hands of a U-boat pack that it was ordered to seek shelter in neutral Lisbon. Many of the merchantmen were lost (including the SS Aquila with 22 Wrens aboard) together with the escorts HMS Bath and HMS Zinnia. The full story is related by Lund and Ludlam in 'Nightmare Convoy' (1987). He then transferred to HMS Guillemot ['HMS Dipper' in the second volume] serving on the East Coast convoys. Among the actions portrayed are the torpedoing of HMS Vortigern by E-boat S-104, and the successful destruction of an HE-111 in August 1941. HMS Guillemot's captain, Lombard-Hobson' has said of Monsarrat 'he was reserved and unpopular, but I liked him myself'. Monsarrat then assumed command of HMS Shearwater ['HMS Winger' in the third volume] operating in the North Sea out of Harwich. Individual volumes are becoming increasingly elusive. COMPLETE SETS ARE SELDOM OFFERED FOR SALE, ESPECIALLY IN THIS CONDITION. Enser, p.120 (HM Corvette); Law 1008 (East Coast Corvette), 1007 (Corvette Command) and 1084 (HM Frigate). Astonishingly 'HM Corvette' is not recorded by Law.

Archive of Walter Johnson's 1933 Atlantic City High School yearbook and related reunion materials documents African American student life within a formally integrated but socially segregated New Jersey public school during the Great Depression. Johnson a graduating senior in 1933 appears in a yearbook extensively inscribed by classmates whose messages span both commencement year and later reunions preserving contemporaneous peer networks across four decades. Created in a city where redlining confined most Black residents to Atlantic City's Northside neighborhood the volume and accompanying ephemera situate one student's educational experience within broader histories of African American urban life public schooling in the Jim Crow North Depression-era youth culture and Black alumni civic organization.

Archive dates primarily from 1933 with later additions from 1978 and subsequent reunion years; ten items total. Central volume is Atlantic City High School yearbook published by Westbrook Publishing Company Philadelphia 1933 183 pages hardcover 10.5 x 7.75 inches extensively inscribed throughout by classmates in 1933 and again at the 45th reunion in 1978. Accompanying materials include a June 16 1933 telegram in original envelope from the Negro Alumni Associates of Atlantic City High School congratulating Johnson on his graduation; two reunion pamphlets from the 45th and 50th reunions; several envelopes including one bearing a lengthy handwritten note from reunion organizer Ben Ginsburg; and two printed advertisements for Atlantic Coast Amusement Enterprises promoting comedians and song-and-dance acts associated with Atlantic City's boardwalk entertainment industry.

Produced in the depths of the Great Depression the yearbook captures a graduating class confronting economic uncertainty while articulating ambition humor and collective identity. Its Art Deco stylistic elements and commercial advertising reflect Atlantic City's resort economy during its interwar peak while the presence of a formal Negro Alumni organization in 1933 demonstrates structured African American institutional engagement within a multiracial public school setting. Later reunion annotations underscore continuity of alumni networks across five decades.
