Lo stampatore svizzero Johann Jacob Thurneysen (1754-1803) fu attivo a Basilea dal 1779 (prima con Wilhelm Haas, poi con Abel Merian e fino al 1791 con J. Lukas Legrand), Stampò testi legati all'Illuminismo quali l'opera di Voltaire e di Federico II di Prussia, fece anche edizioni “pirata” di autori inglesi quali Addison, Smith, Hume. Eludendo la rigida regolamentazione inglese sul copyright, queste venivano pubblicate a minor costo in continente ed importate in Inghilterra, facendo concorrenza agli stampatori locali.
