Significant for its early account of biodiversity in the now protected "Coral Triangle" of the Pacific, Cheesman's succinct and well illustrated primary source reveals highlights of an entire year of entomological research on little-known islands of the Pacific, just north of the Dampier Strait, in Papua New Guinea, on behalf of the Natural History division of the British Museum. The splendid coral reefs of Mayalibit Bay, limestone mountains and formations, a wealth of exotic vegetation, mangrove swamps, fauna and reptilia are but a few features examined. On the volcanic Mount Nok she set up camp, where she interacted with native inhabitants of small villages, remarking on their language, education, and on previous feuds with "Bush Tribes.' On Japen island she first establishes camp on Mt. Baduri, from where she collects samples and observes birds. before relocating to two other locations. In the tropical forests for six months, many samples were acquired, and a remarkable storm was documented.

Constance Frederica 'Eka' Gordon-Cumming (1837-1924) was a travel writer and painter. She was born in Scotland, the 12th child of a wealthy family. She taught herself how to paint, and had help from artists visiting her home, including one of Queen Victoria's favorite painters, Sir Edwin Landseer. After spending a year in India in 1867, she became interested in travel. Gordon-Cumming was a prolific travel writer and landscape painter who traveled the world, mostly in Asia and the Pacific. She painted over a thousand watercolors. Miss Gordon-Cumming received much criticism from male writers of the era, perhaps because she did not fit in the traditional Victorian role of women, as she often traveled alone and unaided. . **PRICE JUST REDUCED! The book describes the 19551956 Norwegian Archaeological Expedition's investigations of Polynesian history and culture at Easter Island, the Austral Islands of Rapa Iti and Raivavae, and the Marquesas Islands of Nuku Hiva and Hiva Oa. Visits to Pitcairn Island, Mangareva and Tahiti are described as well. By far the greatest part of the book tells of the work on Easter Island, where the expedition investigated the giant stone statues (moai), the quarries at Rano Raraku and Puna Pau, the ceremonial village of Orongo on Rano Kau, as well as many other sites throughout the island. Much of the book's interest derives from the interaction of the expedition staff, from their base at Anakena beach, with the Easter Islanders themselves, who lived mainly in the village of Hanga Roa. 361p. illus fold-out maps.
