Single pedestal globe with horizon ring armature & meridian all of wood wear and staining on meridian at point where fits into stand some chipping at extremities else fine; globe with vibrant original color and clear sharp patina; some abrasion & losses mostly in lower and upper extremities; overall very good plus condition.<br /><br />An attractive very capably executed table or desk globe in the distinctive style of the Delamarche firm <i>"the most successful French entrepreneurs in maps and globes"</i> Dekker/ van der Krogt. This was an original work by the son Felix who succeeded his father in the management of the firm in 1817. The globe is geographically up-to-date notably in the South Pacific and Alaska with information from then recent Russian voyages such as Krusenstern's. Related to this at the time the globe appeared and reflected on it Europeans were beginning to differentiate between various regions of the Pacific. These were based on a better understanding of cultural and other differences between the peoples of various areas encountered on these recent voyages. For example in 1831 the French explorer Dumont d'Urville proposed the use of the terms "Micronesia" and "Melanesia" for various parts of the Pacific as distinguished from Polynesia. Printed dashed lines on this globe labeled "Division Oceanique" roughly approximate the three eventually accepted divisions of what is referred to as the South Pacific though the regions are not named on the globe. Delamarche also clearly identifies on the globe the more traditional divisions of the Pacific between "Grand Ocean Boreal" "Grand Ocean Equinoxial" and "Grand Ocean Austral."<br /><br />The Delamarche firm was the first to successfully reach a fairly sizable general market of globe buyers. It accomplished this by reducing the cost of constructing globe stands and other parts while maintaining a high level of quality in the maps of their globes which are cleanly and attractively engraved. Traditional brass meridians were replaced by wooden ones and the horizon rings and armatures supporting the rings were greatly simplified and made from either wood or stiff board. Also the firm generally used simpler single-pedestal stands rather than four-legged designs. Yet as this well-preserved example demonstrates Delamarche's design and materials proved to be very durable.<br /><br />Charles-Francois Delamarche 1740-1817 the founder of the family firm was the successor of the great map and globe-making family the Robert De Vaugondys as is cited in the title of this globe. Delamarche in fact seemed to have cornered the globe market in France by also incorporating the stocks of Jean Fortin and Jean Lattre. Delamarche's son Felix took over the firm upon his father's death and managed it until 1848 when Gosselin succeeded him. Included herein are the reports of Humphreys Stevens Beckwith Whipple Warren Williamson Lander et al supplemented with reports on scientific observations and numerous significant achievements in cartography including Warren's "Map of the Territory of the United States from the Mississippi to the Pacific Ocean." here present in the eleventh volume which has been hailed as "the best cartographical work on the West up to its time." The four views of Honolulu include one wide view of the town a view of a side street with a church steeple in the background the Pali mountain pass and the harbor with several large vessels at anchor. In New Zealand the Supreme Court building in Christchurch and the city of Littleton are displayed. The San Francisco images include the Palace Hotel and the famous Cliff House. Of particular interest are the three views of the Central Pacific Railway. The sections of the track include Capestown the Palisade and Summit Station each with fresh evidence of the line's recent completion. Also in the collection is one image of a railroad along the banks of Salt Lake and three wide views of Salt Lake City one with the Mormon tabernacle completed in 1871 prominently featured. A rare and extravagant promotional for the Pacific Cable Railway Company which manufactured installed and operated the famous streetcar system of San Francisco and in several other American cities. The present work also serves as a declaration of patent with a list of patents and patent holders at the rear and the text comprises a detailed technical description of the wire cable system with many illustrations of its mechanisms and operation as well as general accounts of the systems running in San Francisco Los Angeles Chicago and Kansas City. In addition to the technical diagrams are several attractive line illustrations and eight photolithographed plates reproduced by artotype of the cable cars of San Francisco in action all by Britton & Rey. This copy is inscribed on the front wrapper: "With Regards of James Tilton C.E." Tilton 1819-78 was then chief engineer of the Washington Division of the Northern Pacific Railroad. Thanks in part to his support for Franklin Pierce's presidential campaign Tilton was appointed the first Surveyor General of Washington Territory and served from 1853-61. Both the Tilton River and Fort Tilton near Fall City Washington are named for him. <br> <br> An important report to Congress by the Northern Pacific Railroad headed by Minnesota railroad magnate James J. Hill for federal aid to support the Railroad's expansion to the West Coast. The petition reviews the railroad's original charter printing with it a memorial from the NPRR's Board of Directors and supporting communications from military figures including Montgomery Meigs and Ulysses S. Grant. Since the early 1850s Edwin Johnson described by Wheat as a "visionary" engineer had been associated with the plan to build a railroad across the northern part of the United States from the Great Lakes to the Pacific Coast. In 1867 he was named chief engineer of the Northern Pacific and this memorial is a work of major importance for the history of the railroad. It includes Johnson's topographical survey of the route to the Pacific a discussion of potential problems that may be encountered and a detailed economic and military survey of the area in justification of construction. <br> <br> The exceptional large folding "Map of the Country from Lake Superior to the Pacific Ocean from the Latest Explorations and Surveys" was produced by the Colton firm in New York. One of the finest maps of the region to date it shows the area from Detroit to the Pacific well into Canada and south to about the 39th parallel. Johnson has drawn the route of the Northern Pacific from Lake Superior to Washington Territory where the line splits with one branch heading toward Fort Vancouver and the other to Puget Sound. Among the details shown on the map are the Pony Express route wagon routes and overland mail routes exploration routes and other proposed railroad routes the locations of Indian tribes mineral deposits military forts and much more. Wheat gives a long description of the map and remarks that "the detail of such a map defies cataloging." Construction on the Northern Pacific Railroad began in 1870 and was completed in 1883. Edwin Johnson did not see its completion dying in 1872. An edition of this report with the supporting documents and map was also privately published in Hartford. <br> <br> A significant early account of railroad expansion in the Northwest. We could find only ten copies listed in OCLC and this is the first copy we have seen in wrappers and with a presentation from an important engineer on the project. RAILWAY ECONOMICS pp.242-43. One of 12 copies only all on Rives BFK paper each signed and numbered by Charles Hobson and Kay Bradner who collaborated on the design of the linoleum block print. Page size: 18 inches x 9 inches when closed and folded into 8 leaves and when opened fully 7-1/2 feet. There is a title page and page of text and a colophon page as well as the 8-page folded print. Bound: blue cloth spine coastal map over boards on covers with white label printed in black on front cover housed in translucent plastic slipcase fastening with cleat and sailing line on foredge fine. The central image of this book is a three foot square relief print that was created as part of a program at the San Francisco Center for the Book. It was original printed in 2005 by a steamroller at Carolina and 16th Streets San Francisco. Kay Bradner cut the linoleum block and printed it; Charles Hobson designed the book and assembled it with the assistance of Alice Shaw. The print at first glance seems to show a pleasant Sunday afternoon of sailing on the San Francisco Bay. However the position of the sailboats has been established to illustrate some of the most basic right of way rules. The rules themselves are actually embedded in the image in small window openings cut into the print. As usual with books from Pacific Editions all is meticulously crafted disparate elements aesthetically incorporated into a beautiful book. Both artists have a passion for the water and the vessels that move on it. Charles Hobson's extensive output has as a base the juxtaposition of word and image. He is a faculty member at the San Francisco Art Institute and at one time raced a Cal 20 sailboat on the San Francisco Bay where he had first hand experience with the application of the right of way rules. As with other books from Pacific Editions this too must be experienced. Turning the pages opening the "rules" windows and reveling in the deep blue of the print brings a land-locked person as close to the water as is possible. Pacific Editions unknown books

The text has been printed letterpress by Les Ferriss in Garamond Narrow type. The book and images were created by Charles Hobson who assembled the book with the assistance of Alice Shaw.<br/> Barry Lopez's THE MAPPIST was originally published in 2000 in LIGHT ACTION IN THE CARIBBEAN. It is a multi-layered story perfectly embodied by Charles Hobson's book. Themes of hidden identities searched out and deciphered hidden intentions coded in seemingly disparate actions and the tantalizing possibilities of bringing order to a chaotic history are beautifully served by the combination of maps that are the subject of the story and literally hold the story together. The story itself is certainly one of the wittiest "legends" ever devised for its surrounding map. The reader is challenged with images thrown up by the author and artist: bits of map interspersing text bits of map as foredge and gutter outside edge on any turn of the page a phrase full of possibilities "he was a patriot" and suggestions in the form of queries: was Lewis Mumford a populist When "The Mappist" gives the narrator a copy of his very rare book THE CITY OF GERANIUMS the reader is doubly seduced with this act of generosity or is it instinct to preserve one's values for the words are preceded and followed by a page of transparent film with the image of a map being passed from one hand to another. Turning the film page the reader is confronted with the act being completed and the hand off accomplished. The narrator finishes his tale with a ride down a very dark gravel road using the sound of the tires on the crushed stone as his "map." We are left wondering where will we find our maps - and will we be able to read them - or remember what we've read. Pacific Editions' THE MAPPIST will certainly help in this ongoing quest. The Pacific Railroad Surveys 1853-1855 explored possible routes for a transcontinental railroad. However the surveys went beyond looking for a place for a railroad they included and incredible amount of information on natural history and the peoples that inhabited the areas where the surveys explored. Representing the first part of the final volume of these surveys this installment focused on the northern route for a railroad. The 12 volumes included in these surveys is also known for rich illustrations many of which were in color. A scarce 1882 promotional for potential excursions from Portland Oregon published in conjunction by the Northern Pacific Railroad and the Oregon Railway & Navigation Company. The work is illustrated with a real photograph of the Multnomah Falls east of the city on the Columbia River. The text prints itineraries for ten trips from Portland in the Pacific Northwest to the Cascades the Dalles Seattle Tacoma Olympia Ilwaco and even Alaska almost all via the steamers of the Oregon Railway & Navigation Company. The final four leaves of text contain numerous illustrated advertisements for Portland businesses. The frontispiece photograph of the Multnomah Falls is credited in print to Issac Grundy Davidson. "One of the Northwest's premier photographers Davidson published an extensive series of scenic photographs covering many aspects of life and scenes throughout Oregon Washington and Alaska. He operated portrait studios a traveling gallery and contracted with the Northern Pacific Railroad. Page size: 7-1/2 x 8 inches; 48pp. Bound: two signatures sewn in an accordion structure fabric and paper over boards red printed label on spine; housed in fabric-covered slipcase with red jute twine ties. The design of the book incorporates twine which actually weaves through the text. Inspired by the poem and evoking the experience explored in the text the string / thread acts like a drawn line and can be moved around by the reader to change the "drawing" and the experience. The reverse folds of the book contain images of beets to accentuate characteristics of the poem. The string-like roots and the fullness and ripeness of the vegetable shapes recall and emphasize the individual words from the poem that the artist has chosen to reprint with the images: voice awaken heart distance breath birth. <br/>The poets Paula Sager and Lizbeth Hamlin are practioners and teachers of Authentic Movement a practice that is concerned with the exploration of relationship. In its simplest form there is a mover and a witness. The mover with eyes closed waits for an impulse to move. The witness follows or tracks his or her own experience while being present and attentive to the mover. Their poem is rhythmic and flowing an exploration of insight discovery and personal revelation which is aimed at showing how we as human beings long to relate.<br/>Charles Hobson created the images and reproduced them in hand-colored high resolution digital prints. The text was set by Mr. Hobson in Cantoria MT Light following the authors' original spacing and printed offset. Each page is a visual delight with the text weaving swooping and dipping around the red cotton and jute twine sometimes under the threads with the ensuing shadows but always carrying forward the theme of connectedness. The reader is propelled forward following the motion of the words with the implicit motion of the "thread" of the book. Once again Charles Hobson has taken text and conceived of and created a structure that embodies that text. The reader / viewer is the richer for it. We are presented with a concept and it is explored in the text and then again in the book's structure. And the beets / beats . ! They are the organic imagery that not only move the eye forward but hold the eye with pleasure for at least a beat or two. This House of Commons working paper is a continuation of their return dated July 10 1863 on the subject of constructing a telegraph line to British Columbia and the Pacific. The Hudson's Bay Company unsurprisingly was intimately involved in the machinations for the building of the line. They had made an agreement with the Canadian government to build the telegraph line from the Red River to the Pacific themselves but when they failed to do so a group of English bankers proposed to step in and do the job. The papers included herein provide much information on the qualities of the land between Lake Superior and British Columbia and the need for swift communication throughout and across the vast region. Also included is a memorial from the people of the Red River Settlement discussing their urgent need for the telegraph. <br> <br> The Streeter copy sold to Nebenzahl for $30 in 1969 and was still in his stock when the Reese Company bought the last of it in 2013; here it is. Bound by Klaus-Ullrich Rotzscher: gilt stamped morocco and Twinrocker paper in custom clamshell box. Four of the five etchings accompany each of the four essays by Thomas and a fifth For Quartet weaves visual metaphors of the themes of the four essays. The etchings incorporate a variety of graphic techniques including aquatint spitbite drypoint and hard and soft ground methods. They were proofed by Kay Bradner at Katherine Lincoln Press and the edition was printed by Robert Townsend and Kate Hanlon. The text is handset in 16 point Bembo and Centaur and printed letterpress at the Arif Press by Wesley B. Tanner who also designed the book. Title calligraphy is by John Prestianni. This is a real collaborative effort among artists and the result encompasses Thomas' central themes: the dominant role of symbiosis in life on our planet; guarded optimism in the face of great odds; the magical role of music and metaphor; and the idiosyncracies of language and communication. The late Lewis Thomas National Book Award winner had a long and distinguished career as a scientist before combining that career with that of writing. A collection of striking promotional photographs created to enhance Union Pacific Railroad travel brochures. This collection is focused almost exclusively on the Western United States. The first volume consists primarily of campus photos of western universities with captions in pencil on the verso. Photographs portray the Universities of Nebraska Oregon Wyoming Colorado Denver Kansas Idaho and Montana; Oregon Washington Montana and Kansas State Universities; and finally Stanford University College of Idaho Midland College Nebraska Doane College and Creighton University. The last five photos are images of entrees perhaps for dinner menus on western routes. A number of these photos are stamped "Please Credit Union Pacific Railroad Photo" on the verso. <br> <br> The second volume is composed exclusively of scenes from Colorado with typed captions on the verso. There are images from Rocky Mountain National Park more broadly including Alberta Falls Pike's Peak Railway and the Hidden Inn but the majority are in and around Colorado Springs. There are shots of the Broadmoor and Antlers Hotels downtown Colorado Springs Seven Falls Garden of the Gods Cheyenne Mountain Zoo Cheyenne Mountain Lodge and Will Rogers Shrine. Also included in the archive is a single broadside reward poster offering $5000 for information pertaining to the accident. <br/><br/>According to a contemporary newspaper article which appeared in nearby Jackson County's Independence Examiner the accident was believed to have been caused by juvenile vandalism to a nearby track switch. The collision and subsequent derailment resulted in the death of one engineer whose partial body is visible in several photographs. <br/><br/>The photographs in the archive range from close-up shots of the mangled train cars and tracks to distance views of the surrounding woods. Frequently displayed in the images is a small handwritten police chalkboard noting the date location and case numbers. A very interesting early 20th-century manual and rule book for personnel in the Maintenance and Way Department of the Southern Pacific Railroad. Contained here are rules and instructions for a wide array of railroad employees including roadmasters bridge superintendants trackmen bridgemen and other watchmen. The principal portion of the text comprises nearly 270 general rules and regulations such as those governing the adjustment of woodtruss bridges lining and surfacing track keeping clear rights of way and establishing standards for numerous other basic repairs on track ties signals and other critical infrastructure. A short appendix contains laws from the several states in which Southern Pacific operated regarding the accidental killing of livestock by trains and railroad employees. At the rear are twenty plates many folding with reference diagrams for track and other maintenance projects.<br /><br />This edition is revised from the first edition of 1898 with a substantially different pagination. Several plates have been excised from the rear of this copy; however the only other copy that we locate of this work at UC Santa Barbara also is lacking a number of plates. books

The images appear to be in no particular order with scenes from all the various locales dispersed throughout the album. Other photographs show scenes in Manila including the "oldest church" a "Spanish transport sunk by Dewey" in the Spanish-American War Fort Malata other churches some water buffalo and other rural scenes in the area. Images of Honolulu include a group of school children the palace views in a park and some rural scenes including a waterfall. Images of Japan are primarily from Nagasaki Kobe and Osaka. They include views of the harbors and ships the dry dock at Nagasaki the lower and upper falls at Kobe Japanese peddlers aboard a ship "temple 2000 years old" at Nagasaki among others. Views of Alaska are primarily taken from off the coast showing Dutch Harbor from several angles. <br> <br> The transport ship Oopack is featured in several photos; the Oopack was a British merchant vessel that was sunk by the Germans in 1918 off the coast of Malta. Several unlabeled photos at the rear of the volume show what are presumably local scenes from home likely the Pacific Northwest. There are two farmers plowing a field behind a horse bathers at the seashore picnickers and other group photos. The Neapolitan-born Gaspare Luigi Pacifico Spontini 1774-1851 was a celebrated composer of operas in his day who made his career in Paris under the patronage of the Empress Josephine. His most famous opera LA VESTALE premiered in Paris in 1807 and according to Grove's Dictionary underwent over 200 performances in Paris by the year 1824. As late as 1954 in fact in celebration of the composer's 180th birthday it enjoyed a revival at La Scala with Maria Callas in the leading role.<br/><br/>According to calendars only these two years during Spontini's time in Paris had a September 22 which fell on Wednesday. A total of 23 games are scored including the October 3rd & 4th 1936 World Series games between the New York Giants and the New York Yankees. Gerhig hit a home run in each of these two games and such is herein recorded. Further this the first World Series played by the young phenom Joe DiMaggio. A graphically impressive company journal issued by the major Chilean mining and manufacturing firm Compañia de Acero del Pacifico CAP. Founded in 1947 CAP is still one of the largest industrial concerns in all of Latin America. Huachipato a publication aimed toward the company's employees chronicles activities both within the company and in the surrounding apparently vast company town. In addition to industrial and technological achievements the publication documents the social life of the company's workers with much coverage of sporting and cultural events the town's soccer team also called Huachipato was elevated to Chile's primera división as early as 1965. The journal is noteworthy for its graphical sophistication with photo-montaged covers sprightly layouts and a mid-century aesthetic reflecting Latin America's internationalist ambitions during this period. Original Plexiglas binding brad bound with a cover reading: "Construction Photographs 55th Seabee's." The photographs are clean and clear. Near fine. A very interesting album of photographs documenting the construction of the U.S. Navy Base on the tiny island of Mios Woendi during World War II. Located in the Dutch East Indies near Indonesia Mios Woendi was an important base for American PT boats and for larger ships as well. The photographs in this album show the construction of the base by the U.S. Navy construction battalion known as the "Seabees." The photographs give aerial views of the island the dense foliage the Seabee's camp and dozens of detailed views of all stages of the construction of the base. Also dozens of PT boats - this could be "McHale's Navy." Likely produced in a very small number for military authorities and participants in the construction. Tape repair across portion of horizontal fold; one panel with patches of light staining. A scarce colorful promotional for the Rock Island Route as well as its national and international connections with a fascinating stamp of an Australian sales agent. One side of the sheet prints an extensive promotional text and timetables for the various routes and services of the Chicago Rock Island & Pacific Railway. The main side of the sheet prints a map of the United States with state borders shaded in four colors highlighting the principal routes of the Rock Island from Chicago to Minnesota Iowa and Kansas and its connections to points on both the East and West Coasts. An inset map at lower right promotes the Rock Island as part of a transcontinental route between the United Kingdom Ireland and Australia. Most interestingly this copy is stamped on the cover panel with the information of a George. H. Hibbard "Australian Passenger Agent America's Cons'd Trans-continental Railways 6 Bridge Street Sydney N.S.W." Hibbard was evidently the agent in charge of distributing information about the trans-America route in Sydney one of its end points. Several issues of this map were published during the 1880s all scarce. We locate copies of the present 1885 issue at Stanford SMU and the Library of Congress. Geo. F. Cram unknown books
