FIRST EDITION, CONTEMPORARY OUTLINE COLOUR -The Italian painter and engraver, Giovanni Maria Cassini, produced this attractive map of the Tonga Islands, with Cook's tracks decoratively traced between them. Tonga became known as the Friendly Islands because of the hospitable reception given to Captain James Cook on his first visit in 1773.Published in: Nuovo atlante geografico universale delineato sulle ultime osservazioni. Roma, Calcografia camerale, 1792-1801.Cassini was geographer and cartographer but he was also good at engraving architectural items and perspectives – he was one of the best disciples Giovanni Battista Piranesi had. Moreover, Cassini was one of the last artists to engrave spheres in the XVIII century and his globes were quite famous and widespread, and realized the most important Italian Atlas of the XVIII century; his maps always bear a cartouche, extremely rich in colours and details. Copperplate with fine original hand colour, some foxing, otherwise in very good condition.

FIRST EDITION, CONTEMPORARY OUTLINE COLOUR -The Italian painter and engraver, Giovanni Maria Cassini, produced this attractive map of the Tonga Islands and Christmas Island. The Society Islands are a group of islands located in the Pacific Ocean and part of French Polynesia. It includes Bora Bora, Tahiti, Moorea, Taha'a and Huahine. The archipelago is suspected to have been named by Captain James Cook supposedly in honour of the Royal Society, the sponsor of the first British scientific survey of the islands; however, Cook himself stated in his journal that he called the islands Society "as they lay contiguous to one another."Christmas Island was first discovered on in 1615 by Captain John Milward of the East India Company ship, and it was named Christmas Island on 25 December 1643.Cassini was geographer and cartographer but he was also good at engraving architectural items and perspectives – he was one of the best disciples Giovanni Battista Piranesi had. Henry Ward Beecher ( 1813 1887) was an American Congregationalist clergyman, social reformer, and speaker, known for his support of the abolition of slavery, his emphasis on God's love, and his 1875 adultery trial . Several of his brothers and sisters became well-known educators and activists, most notably Harriet Beecher Stowe, who achieved worldwide fame with her abolitionist novel Uncle Tom's Cabin ..Over the course of his ministry, he...grew interested in social reform, particularly the abolitionist movement. In the years leading up to the Civil War, he raised money to purchase slaves from captivity and to send riflesnicknamed Beecher's Biblesto abolitionists fighting in Kansas and Nebraska . After the war, Beecher supported social reform causes such as women's suffrage and temperance. He also championed Charles Darwin's theory of evolution, stating that it was not incompatible with Christian beliefs . Beecher's long career in the public spotlight led biographer Debby Applegate to call her biography of him The Most Famous Man in America (Wikipedia, 2019) . OCLC: 17882630. Decorativa carta geografica pubblicata in The Illustrated Atlas, And Modern History Of The World Geographical, Political, Commercial & Statistical… edito da John Tallis. Incisione su acciaio, coloritura dei confini all'acquarello, in ottime condizioni. Islands outlined with gold and surrounded by illustrations of Auckland, Mount Egmont, a New Zealander, and the port of Wellington. Border in a New Zealand motif. Decorative map taken from The Illustrated Atlas, And Modern History Of The World Geographical, Political, Commercial & Statistical by John Tallis The maps from The Illustrated Atlas were first published in serial form to a target audience that led insular lives due to the expense and hardship of travel. All that changed as the progress of the nineteenth century brought swift and dramatic changes in public awareness of far away places. Tallis' maps no doubt played an important role in this dramatic awakening. These maps not only provided up-to-date geographical knowledge, but also used vignette views within the map's design to show the native people and their occupations, cities and points of interest. The maps hark back to a cartographic tradition from the Dutch mapmakers of the seventeenth century with finely engraved decorative borders. The maps were drawn and engraved by John Rapkin with views drawn and engraved by a number of prominent artists. The maps were issued as a complete volume from 1851 until about 1865. Some of the maps were also published in other history books published by Tallis including British Colonies and, without the vignettes, in geographical dictionaries and encyclopedias until about 1880. John Tallis (1817-1876) was a British map publisher. Born in the Midlands, Tallis came to London in the 1840s. Tallis began his London career with a series of remarkable London street views. He began a partnership with a Frederick Tallis, possibly his brother, but their collaboration ended in 1849. For the Great Exhibition of 1851, Tallis published the Illustrated World Atlas, one of the last series of decorative world maps ever produced. The maps were later reissued by the London Printing & Publishing Company, who left the Tallis imprint intact, thus ensuring his enduring fame. In 1858, he began publication of the popular Illustrated News of the World and National Portrait Gallery of Eminent Personages, selling it in 1861 (it ceased publication in 1863). Engraving, hand-coloured outlines, in very good condition.

"It's difficult to imagine people would be willing to leave the sunny islands of Polynesia to live in British Columbia and the Pacific Northwest. Yet during the nineteenth century, scores of Hawaiians did just that. By the 1880s the Kanakas (the Hawaiian word for "human beings") were living in the Vancouver area, Victoria, the Gulf Islands, and in scattered communities along the coast of B.C. and Washington. This work chronicles the lives of the brave and hardy Kanakas and their offspring, and recognizes the contribution these people made to British Columbia and the Pacific Northwest". - back cover. A PRESENTATION COPY FROM THE AUTHOR TO ANTHONY PAVIA WITH THE FORMER'S SIGNED HOLOGRAPH INSCRIPTION ON FRONT FREE ENDPAPER. With the publisher's separately printed slip giving the context of the work, and the original bilingual price slip. The publisher's note makes it clear that this work, although the first to appear in print, was conceived as the third volume of a projected three-volume series 'Survey on the Japanese Naval Vessels 1925-1947'. It seems unlikely, however, that any further volumes were published and that this volume therefore stands alone; CERTAINLY IT CONSTITUTES THE FINEST PUBLISHED COLLECTION OF PHOTOGRAPHS OF ITS TYPE. Constructor Lieutenant-Commander Shizuo Fukui (1913-1993), Imperial Japanese Navy, was one of the world's foremost experts on ship design and naval construction. He was the author of some fourteen books and numerous magazine articles, which form collectively the definitive photographic record of the IJN. His wartime appointments ranged from the HQ of the Combined Fleet to the Navy Technical Institute; he ended his service career as Chief Officer and Director of Naval Construction at one of the major naval shipyards. After the war he devoted himself to historical research and made a lifelong contribution to the preservation of the records of ships of the Imperial Navy. His private library eventually contained over 20,000 photos, most of them unique, of which the great majority remains unpublished. Anthony Pavia was the owner of an archive of related photographs which it is believed found a home in the UK after Pavia's death. We are indebted to Mr. Robin Bursell for the information on Anthony Pavia. SIGNED COPIES OF ANY WORK BY FUKUI ARE RARE.
