Squier fu nominato incaricato speciale per gli affari in tutti gli stati centroamericani nel 1849 e negoziò trattati con il Nicaragua, l'Honduras e San Salvador. Nel 1853 fece una seconda visita in America Centrale per esaminare una linea per una ferrovia interoceanica progettata e per studiare ulteriormente l'archeologia del paese. Squier was appointed special chargè d’ affaires in all Central American states in 1849 and negotiated treaties with Nicaragua, Honduras and San Salvador. In 1853 he made a second visit to Central America to examine a line for a planned interoceanic railway and to further study the archeology of the country.
