1995000854nENGLAND BROADMOOR PRISON PARKHURST WAKEFIELD. Very Good. 1995. On offer is an original exciting massive archive of correspondence some hand-drawn art other writings including poetry articles postcards photos greeting cards and both terrifying and humorous intimate personal letters news clippings and ephemera relating to and created by Charles Bronson - born Michael Peterson his named was changed by his boxing manager - who is considered to be Britains most feared in/famous and notorious prisoner. He is also the author of ten books a poet armed robber kidnapper philanthropist philosopher boxer award winning fitness expert and former circus strongman. Mr. Bronson was first arrested as a 19 year old in 1974 and has been in prison for 34 years and over 28 years in solitary and has been free less than 120 days in that 34 years. He has been moved over 150 times to and within different prisons. Mr. Bronson has also committed some renowned notorious acts while in prison including a number of spectacular hostage-takings; they include a two day rooftop protest at Broadmoor Prison in 1983 which caused three quarters of a million pounds damage. In a 1994 kidnapping/escape attempt he demanded a helicopter an inflatable doll and a cup of tea as ransom for the release of the guard he was holding at Woodhill Prison. There is a worldwide petition to free Charles Bronson based on the fact that he has suffered an extraordinarily lengthy incarceration while never having killed raped or molested anyone. Free in spirit Mr. Bronsons original conviction of 7 years for armed robbery has blossomed to 34 years due to his numerous prison scrapes with authority. Many organizations for prisoner's rights have declared him a political prisoner making his long term incarceration all the more untenable. This archive is the accumulation of approximately 15 years by a woman who at one time was engaged to be married to Mr. Bronson. As such the correspondence is of an intimate nature on all levels of Mr. Bronsons personal and penal life; relationships activities hardships with all of its tragedies and comedies. Further correspondence details every aspect of his life in jail his attempts to be free his physical fitness program. Mr. Bronson is an incredibly expressive and prolific writer and there are many many streams of correspondence; writings to and from his fiance lawyers publishers editors other convicts fans and friends. He is obviously intelligent and a very driven man in many ways. Some of this material is not for the weak of heart and some will have you laughing hard. Mr. Bronson also had a number of interesting friends; he is godfather to the son of Ronald Biggs of the Great Train Robbery fame; a pal to the Kray Brothers leaders of an infamous family run crime gang of whom he wrote a book based on their lives and relationship with him are but a few. We noted a Christmas card to Mr. Bronson's fiance with his and perhaps 30 autographs of other well wishers for example. This archive is the definition of 'one of a kind' as a unique unparalleled look into the essence of criminality law enforcement criminal psychology and the British government and it's penal system. It is also a one of a kind portal into the heart soul mind and demons of a long term convict a noted artist prolific writer poet with the added perspective of a romance and long distance relationship of very high intensity. There are many many hundreds if not over a 1000 pages of correspondence filling a 22 x 16 x 7 inch tub right now and will probably ship in one banker's box and will require a secure shipping method like UPS. We noticed about half a dozen pieces of original artwork a small number of large and small format postcard style paper with artwork and then doodles and drawings throughout the correspondence. Illustrated with 15 original photographic prints of the mannequins photographed by Man Ray at the 1938 International Exhibition of Surrealism. The mannequins had been transformed by Man Ray himself Salvador Dalí Oscar Dominguez Marcel Duchamp Max Ernst Espinoza Maurice Henry Marcel Jean Léo Malet André Masson Sonia Mossé Joan Miró Wolfgang Paalen Kurt Seligmann and Yves Tanguy. They were presented within a Surrealist staging by Marcel Duchamp and lighting designed by Man Ray himself. During the 1930s the European Surrealists had a fetishistic interest in simulated woman-female mannequins that they transformed into playful sculptural works of art. In 1938 Man Ray photographed a series of their work at the Exposition Internationale du Surréalisme presented in the unsettling half-light of the Galerie des Beaux-Arts on the rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré. Visitors walking down a corridor on the Rue Surréaliste saw a series of dressmakers mannequins inhabitants of a dreamlike Paris scantily clad or adorned with a jumble of incongruous objects and flanked by street signs bearing highly symbolic names: some real such as the Rue des Vieilles Lanternes where Gérard de Nerval took his own life or the Rue Vivienne where Lautréamont once lived alongside invented ones such as the Rue aux Lèvres the Rue de Tous-les-Diables and the Rue de la Transfusion-de-Sang. The installations of this first international Parisian Surrealist exhibition organised by André Breton and Éluard marked a decisive moment in the history of the movement. For the first time the event dispensed with a straightforward retrospective of individual artists in favour of a series of phantasmagorical stagings live performances and ephemeral artworks prefiguring the modern concepts of installation and happening. Nearly 3000 visitors are said to have thronged to this 1938 Paris exhibition by the light of electric torches: One has the feeling of leaning over certain exhumed walls and of being the first to decipher their signs. Jean Fraysse Le Figaro littéraire 29 January 1938. From Hausmanns sculpture and de Chiricos paintings to the works of Hans Bellmer the mannequin had long occupied a central place in the Dada and Surrealist artistic vocabulary and was cited in Bretons 1924 Manifeste. These woman-objects staged in the spirit of the Musée Grévin offered infinite possibilities for the transformation of the body and the exploration of the unconscious. Some have remained enduringly celebrated such as Le Bâillon vert à bouche de pensée André Massons mannequin enclosed in a birdcage or Duchamps considered the only three-dimensional version of his alter ego Rrose Sélavy taking the form of a man cross-dressed as a woman in the style of Claude Cahun. The mannequin of lesbian artist Sonia Mossé friend of Artaud and photographed by Man Ray with Nusch is her only known artwork and the sole mannequin in the installation created by a woman artist. Association copy inscribed by the publisher to Salvador Dali "To Salvador Dali - Not as good as your cookbook - but the Spanish edition will be better - Lyle Stuart." The true first edition of this infamous manual that includes instructions on making bombs weapons drugs and much besides. This copy in the rarer hardback edition. Stuart's publishing house developed a reputation as a publisher of controversial books he collaborated with Salvador Dali when he helped publish his set of six lithographs The Lyle Stuart Tarot. A letter of provenance accompanies this book. Near fine in a very good dust jacket. Introduction by Peter M. Bergman. An exceptional association. Written by William Powell as a teenager and first published in 1971 at the height of Vietnam War protests and the counterculture movement in the United States 'The Anarchist Cookbook' was created as an educational tool meant to teach the general public "that violence is an acceptable means to bring about political change" and provide them with the skills to do so. The book contains instructions for the manufacture of explosives rudimentary bugging devices lethal and nonlethal weapons as well as instructions for the home manufacture of illicit drugs including LSD. When Powell converted to Anglicanism in 1976 he attempted to have the book removed from circulation but because the copyright had been issued to the original publisher Lyle Stuart and subsequent publishers that purchased the rights circulation continued until 1991. 1969190911New York: Maecenas Press Random House 1969. Wonderland Surrealized First Dalí edition number 608 of 2500 copies signed by Dalí on the title page recasting Carroll's children's classic into adult surrealist vision. "The artist Salvador Dalí famous for his surreal images of melting clocks and barren landscapes at first glance might not seem to have much in common with a retiring Victorian English don who wrote children's books. But actually Dalí and Carroll had much in common: both men were ardent explorers of dreams and the imagination attempting in their art to show the fertile pathways to the unconscious. This artistic temperament might explain why in his sixties Dalí created twelve surreal illustrations - one for each chapter - for Alice in Wonderland. Because he required a rich lush palette for his painted drawings Dalí turned to the oldest process for reproducing photographic images for printing: heliogravure. Similar to engraving the method is time consuming and costly. Each heliogravure is printed by hand and considered an original" Nichols p. 28. A further 200 copies were issued signed and with extra plates. This copy has a duplicate limitation leaf numbered 608 inserted; presumably a collation error by the publisher; the book is otherwise complete. Folio. 196839447Paris: Draeger 1968. Salvador Dalí. First edition. A PRESENTATION COPY FOR DR. ROUCAUTE Dalí's personal physician with a SIGNED AND DEDICATED INDIA INK DRAWING BY DALI ON A PRELIMINARY BLANK. Most of Dalí's presentation drawings were done on the spur of the moment in ballpoint or felt-tip pen and are rather simple compositions. This one however is in India ink with Dalí's characteristic carefully-planned spatter: it was obviously prepared ahead of time for presentation to a close friend the doctor. The drawing measures 27.5 x 30 cm and features several typical elements of Dalí's iconography: a knight on horseback an angel a dedicatory phrase a signature with a crown and a date. They are arranged in an absolutely wonderful apparent chaos--making it impossible to know what to look at first or what to focus on--and yet there is perfect harmony. Large 4to. Publisher's cloth with dustjacket. An excellent copy of the book WITH THE INDIA INK DRAWING IN PERFECT CONDITION.

Draeger hardcover
