18435755San Salvador: May 25 1843. Very good. Small broadside approximately 8.5 x 6.5 inches. Minor creasing and soiling. Small broadside that asks for the revelation of the author of an anonymous offending pamphlet and letter addressed to Isidro Viteri in San Salvador. Beyond the insults that must be corrected in the public record Viteri says that since the author calls him a "antiguo amigo mio" it is only fair that the identity of the provocateur be made known. 18765735Chalchuapa El Salvador 1876. Still very good. 3pp. on a bifolium. Folio. Crinkling and minor wear at edges. Faint dampstain to upper right corner. The president of Guatemala Justo Rufino Barrios invaded El Salvador in 1876 following the presidential election there. Barrios suspected that both the elected and former presidents had been harboring Guatemalan opponents to his regime and hope to install someone more favorable. The present "political plan" for El Salvador reads more as an indictment of the two leaders Santiago Gonzalez and Andres del Valle than an as organizing document for a new government. The first signer here is Rafael Zaldivar the choice of Barrios for next president of El Salvador and the work was printed in the field at Chalchuapa on April 10 1876 approximately one week before the decisive battles that forced the capitulation of the Salvadoran government. 18167461Mexico City: Mariano Ontiveros 1816. First edition. 16mo 15 x 10.5 cm pp 128 179-213 11. There is a gap as noted in the pagination which is present in all copies: it is a printer's error as nothing is missing from the text. The author notes that his book is in part a translation from the Italian of Clavijero and also drawn from the work of Fr. Xavier Francisco Alegre on the Jesuits in New Spain at that time unpublished. The first part is a vigorous defense of the Jesuit order still forbidden in Mexico. Thereafter he focuses on Baja California with much on Fr. Salvatierra Ugarte Piccolo et al. as well as the customs of the native tribes of the area and a description of the region. An appendix seeks to prove that Mexico had been originally evangelized by St. Thomas the apostle and perhaps even St. Matthew! Another appendix gives a thorough account of the distribution of the 1000 copies of this book of which only a handful of copies were for sale. Often described as one of the rarest California books it seldom appears at auction and presumably is quite rare in the trade. Medina Mexico 11174; Barrett Baja 839; Howes S78; Sabin 24147 Beautiful period binding of full mottled calf with gilt incised floral patterns within borders and morocco spine label. 18613383San Salvador 1861. Good. Broadside 12.5 x 8.5 inches. Old folds minor creasing small marginal tears and marginal chips along edges not affecting text. Lower corner torn away signs of tape repair to verso slightly browned due to paper quality. An evidently unrecorded broadside from El Salvador that thanks the “soldados ciudadanos" for their loyalty to Gerardo Barrios the President of El Salvador from 1859 to 1863. The document also urges these citizens to be prepared to arise from their peaceful existence at any time in order to defend their leader. Barrios was a popular President considered a national hero who improved the education system in El Salvador and worked to lessen the influence of the Catholic Church ordering all priests in El Salvador to swear loyalty to the government. In 1863 he lost his presidency to conservative leader Francisco Dueñas Díaz in a coup after which he fled the country. Barrios was court martialed and beheaded in 1865 when he returned in an attempt to regain power. None in OCLC. unknown
