Very good with traces of grey paper mount adhering in a thin strip to the reverse of the second leaf. Ellenborough will 'afford' Nichols 'every facility for the making of tracings from the Tiles at Southam'. If Nichols will let him know when he is coming he will 'make it a point to be here'. Suggests that Nichols might come 'after Church about 2 o'clock on Sunday next'. In reply Nichols says he will do himself 'the honour of calling at the hour you name'. 21634Studley Royal Ripon 25 August 1886. 3 pp. 7 x 4 inches vertical folds in good condition. Marked Private. George Frederick Samuel Robinson first Marquess of Ripon 1827-1909 Liberal statesman. Ripon was Viceroy of India 1880-1884. As regards Burma I share your disquietude as to the state of things there. I always entertained the strongest conviction that the annexation of Upper Burma would prove a much more difficult & a far less profitable undertaking than its eager advocates seemed to suppose - but on the other hand I doubt the possibility now of restoring what has been destroyed & I am afraid that we must pay the penalty of Lord R Churchills rash policy. I agree very much with you in the belief that these things will not be stopped until the cost of them is practically brought home to the British taxpayer. unknown

His shadow haunts the room.' He concludes with an invitation to Havelock-Allan to visit him 'whenever the spirit moves you'. On letterhead of the India Office, Whitehall. 24 October [1912]. unknown
