190811098Simla India: Government Monotype Press 1908. Book. Good. Hardcover. Half-leather and dark green cloth. Raised bands on the spine with red leather labels and gilt lettering. The lower label stamped "For Official Use Only." No. 1387 stamped in gilt on the upper leather corner of the front cover. Rubbing wear to the leather slight evidence of powder residue red rot from the some parts of the leather and two of the spine labels show slight peeling from the spine. The cloth has some insect damage along the top edge of the rear cover and the fore-edges. The interior has foxing on the endpapers affecting the bookplate on the front endpaper and on several adjacent pages. The upper corners of about the first hundred pages are creased or bent from having been bumped. 461 pages with six fold-out sketches/maps tipped in and one large fold-out general map rear pocket illustrating this volume. Bookplate of an early British aviator Neville Morris Jenkins affixed on the front pastedown. He is listed as Lt. Neville Morris Jenkins RA one of the pilots receiving an Aviator's Certificate from the Royal Aero Club in 1913. CONTENTS: Chapters I-III are about the Afridi Tribe Chapter IV - Orakzai Tribe Chapter V - The Zaimukht Tribe Chapter Vi - The Turi and Bangash Tribes Chapter VII - Darwesh Khel Wazirs Chapter VIII-IX - Masud Wazirs and Bhittanis and Chapter X - The Dawaris. Dustjacket. 187pp. Strong and tight but visibly sunned to spine and edges of binding and a little bumped to the head of the spine. The priceclipped dustjacket is similarly sunned to the spine and has some light marginal wear but shows very well. A very good presentable copy. Internally clean with some annotation and emphasis to the text from an informed reader presumably Angus Thurmer. There is a 2 page letter from Major General Lunt dated January 1971 on Ministry of Defense notepaper to Angus Thurmer at the US Embassy in New Delhi discussing the book and the editing work and apprising Mr. Thurmer of his current status. Major General Lunt CBE had a prominent and successful career in the British Military spending a significant part of his career in India including a stint as Military Adviser to the High Commission there is a note on the title page to the effect that the book's attentive reader played Polo with Lunt whilst he was stationed in Delhi. The first edition of "From Sepoy to Subedar" was published in 1873 then languished forgotten for almost a century until Major General Lunt in his role as accomplished "Old India Hand" decided a new edition was called for. Primary source material for the period from native Indians is relatively thin on the ground spanning as it does Subedar Ram's memories of the Afghan Wars the first two the retreat from Khabul the subsequent trials and tribulations of a soldier's life and the post-"mutiny" changes to the leadership and administration of India and how badly that went. A fascinating account which should be ranked alongside "Confessions of a Thug" and Lady Florentia Sale's Journal as insights with all faults into the nature of life in and under the British Raj. The traditional flatwoven Indian dhurrie has long been overshadowed by the luxuriant Mughal pile carpets. Transcending social boundaries the dhurrie was used by commoner and royalty alike - at its simplest it was a multi-purpose textile used as floor covering bedding or packaging. At its most elaborate however woven with the finest fibres and enhanced with gold threads it graced the palaces of royalty. This pioneering work traces the dhurrie back into the mists of prehistoric India with beautifully reproduced photographs of extant examples through the centuries. It pays particular attention to the design and colouring of dhurries from classic stripes to ornate geometrical designs as well as pictorial dhurries.
