Founded in 1907 by Jamsetji Tata and producing steel by 1912 the company became the largest steel plant in the British Empire. It was set up in only 3 years with construction plans drawn up by American and Belgian engineers. The plant rapidly produced steel critical for use in W.W.I: 1500 miles of rail and 300000 tons of steel material for military campaigns in Mesopotamia Egypt Salonica and East Africa.<br /> <br /> Both images are company pictures; the first depicts most of the work force standing on risers in front of the plant's massive chimneys with Indian workers standing and 5 British directors in white pith helmets seated in the foreground.
