Ghost of a seal on tube. Broadside in excellent condition.F. S. Jackson who had played cricket for Cambridge University Yorkshire and England was appointed Governor of Bengal in 1927. This is the welcoming broadside "issued" by the local villagers ahem and presented to Jackson. In 1932 in Calcutta he survived an assassination attempt by the revolutionary and nationalist Bina Das. White label 'ON VIEW' stuck to front cover. 392 3 lots fully priced in manuscript for the proprietor with the firm's stamp and a signature dated from 'The Exchange Calcutta 24th. February 1912'. An interesting and evocative piece of Raj social history itemising the property of a judge who was selling up before retiring to England. The first item is 'A CURRY Stone with muller' '-/8/- lot' and Item 392 'a Salamander' '3/- lot'. The last three lots unnumbered are 'a Standard Square Pianoforte by Schiedmayer and Soehne Stuttghart in mahogany case resting on four supports' '125/- lot' 'a teakwood morocco covered revolving Music Stool' '10/-â€-' and 'a Chubb's Fire-resisting Iron Safe with key … on teakwood stand' '115/-â€-'. With a folding table. Rare directory describing Calcutta's inhabitants during the Company rule in India 1773-1858. It lists the members of the government civil servants and the members of the king's troops as well as schools events religious societies births marriages and deaths and the departure and arrival of ships with the ships from Calcutta further highlighted on a folding table. The work is very rare as it is only available in one library and we have not been able to find it in any sales records of the past 100 years. This seemingly exhaustive directory is an invaluable resource for anyone interested in the movements of people in Bengal at the time.The leather is somewhat scratched and bumped the front joint has split at the head and foot but the board is still attached the leather on the spine is slightly cracked. With a grey stain on the fore-edge some of the text on page 25-29 has been crossed out by hand pages XI-XIV in the back are nearly detached. Notably Bengali bandits or dacoits as they were termed in the Indian subcontinent did not emerge from a particular social class caste or creed as was the case in other parts of the country. In 1830 the East India Company established the Thuggee and Dacoity Department in an effort to suppress the operations of armed marauders; the Thuggee and Dacoity Suppression Acts which followed were enacted between 1836 and 1848.
