[MELKONIAN EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTE - NICOSIA, CYPRUS] Melgonean Krt'akan Hastatut'iwn (Nikosia, Kipros): Ch'amarrot teghekatoi, 1966-1967. The Melkonian Educational Institute (MEI) was an Armenian boarding school of high academic standard located in Nicosia, Cyprus. Established in 1926 by the Melkonian brothers, it was the only remaining boarding school servicing students of the Armenian Diaspora from nearly 40 countries. Krikor Melkonian and Garabed Melkonian are widely regarded as the greatest benefactors of the Armenian nation. They were prominent tobacco traders from Egypt. In the aftermath of the Armenian Genocide they decided to establish this school in Cyprus. To that end, they liquidated all their assets and established the Melkonian Fund and entrusted the management (and not the ownership) of the Melkonian School to the AGBU. Both brothers are buried at the School grounds, at the open space between the two main buildings. A beautifully designed marble monument with intricate engravings and the bronze busts of the Melkonian Brothers prominently stand as a gesture of eternal gratitude to their memory. For thousands of Melkonian graduates and friends this is a sacred place. (Source: Wikipedia).
Designed for sailing in the Ionian islands and covering the west coast of Greece, Crete, rhodes, cyprus and the South coast of Turkey. As well as all the practical navigational details it is full of fascinating details of the places, including descriptions of traditional local sailing craft. "This sea-guide replaces the second edition of The Ionian Islands to Rhodes and Southern Turkey, The Levant and Cyprus. One of the merits of this revised and enlarged volume is the comprehensive coverage it gives of a fascinating cruising area that extends from Corfu in northwest Greece to Cyprus and the coastline of Anatolia in the east. For active yachtsman or armchair voyager Henry Denham is an enlightening and invaluable companion for a cruise south from Corfu to the other Ionian Islands - Cephalonia, Ithaca, Zante - with a diversion into the Gulfs of Pátras and Corinth, reviving memories of Lord Byron at Missolonghi and Saint Andrew at Pátras. Then, south again by the western shores of the Peloponnesus to southern Crete, thence eastwards to Rhodes and Cyprus and adventuring still further into the waters of the least-known part of the eastern Mediterranean to explore the magnificent coastline of southern Turkey. Yachtsmen know that in a Denham sea-guide they will find not only detailed advice on cruising, pilotage, prohibited areas, port formalities, berthing, laying-up facilities and supplies but also a wealth of historical and archaeological information about places and ancient sites en route."224 p.Illus. maps. charts. "He paints pictures with words".; "A gifted writer a natural story teller".; "An excellent and truthful story about the author's boyhood and family life in Paphos. The reader lives the emotion page by page". "This is an autobiography, cleverly written in the third person, and what I have read so far covers the birth of young Gökalp at Paphos in 1940, and the ensuing 16 years - after which he was to be spirited away from the island to avoid death at the hands of the EOKA terrorists. There is no trace of hysteria in this writing, which is fluently economical with its prose, and an absolute delight to read. In fact, I am quite impatient to read the rest of this captivating first novel.

NEW - Will be sent to you direct from the publisher. Translated from Greek by Donald E. Martin and and Soterios G Stavrou. Tetralogy of the Times is a powerful document capturing the mood of the Cypriot people, in Chekhovian sensibility fronm the years of their British colonial status to their present predicament. As the author points out"the shocking events of l955-1959 in Cyprus moved me as they moved other writers too, -to attempt to express the events and the climate of that era. The first section of the Tetralogy "Times immovable" portays the period before l955 when Cyprus was a British colony. it is followed by "times of difficulty" which canvasses the struggle of the Cypriot people for independence. The first years of independent Cyprus are captured in the third collection of stories called "Times of Affluence".It brings the story to l974 when the coup d'etat against Archbishop Makarios took place, an incident which gave Turkey the opportunity and excuse to invade Cyprus. The Turkish invasion and its consequences -political, social and moral- are dealt with in the fourth section "Times of Suffering" . 269p. Book

"First published in Greece, this account of Turkish policy towards Cyprus since the 1950s is essential reading for anyone wishing to know why the diplomatic stalemate appears so intractable.. of particular interest is the author' detailed study, often from primary sources, of Turkey's ambition to create a "legal" basis for the Turkish Cypriot's demand for separate self-determination and sovereignty.
