Wide ranging anthology of translations of poetry, prose and art by modern Cypriots. 192p + Plates.. illus. Book
Through playful banter over coffee in an Ottoman courtyard in the divided capital of Cyprus, the author and her group of friends from both sides of the divide, share their moving, funny and harrowing experiences of life on this Mediterranean island, taking in an anticolonial struggle, internecine fighting, war, partition and endless, ineffective peace negotiations, in what has become known as ‘the Cyprus problem’. ? They are the Traitors’ Club, traitors because they are friends, because they don’t want to colour themselves as either Greek or Turkish, but as Cypriots, and because they have a goal that the rest of their compatriots don’t seem to share – to live together as one people.

In the summer of 1972, Famagusta in Cyprus is the most desirable resort in the Mediterranean, a city bathed in the glow of good fortune. An ambitious couple open the island"s most spectacular hotel, where Greek and Turkish Cypriots work in harmony. Two neighbouring families, the Georgious and the Ãzkans, are among many who moved to Famagusta to escape the years of unrest and ethnic violence elsewhere on the island. But beneath the city"s façade of glamour and success, tension is building. When a Greek coup plunges the island into chaos, Cyprus faces a disastrous conflict. Turkey invades to protect the Turkish Cypriot minority, and Famagusta is shelled. Forty thousand people seize their most precious possessions and flee from the advancing soldiers. In the deserted city, just two families remain. This is their story Book

East European monographs, No. 125. Bellapais is a small village in Northern Cyprus, about four miles from the town of Kyrenia. The village was the home for some years of Lawrence Durrell, who wrote about life in Cyprus in his book Bitter Lemons. He mentions passing the time drinking coffee under the Tree of Idleness in the village and there are two places which lay claim to being the spot. Unfortunately his book did not identify it completely, or perhaps fortunately, because two establishments can now profit from the name. His house, up a very steep climb, has a plaque on it and one can have the pleasure of returning by a not-quite-so-perpendicular way that passes by old olive presses.

"Hitherto Numismatists when stydying the Origines of Coinage had confined themselves to the materials presented to them in the earliest money of Lydia, Greece and Italy, and on the other hand the Metrologists had almost completely limited their range of observation to the systems of Babylon, Egypt, Greece and Rome. As the Comparative Method has yielded such excellent results in the study of other human institutions, I have endeavoured by its aid to get some new principles which may throw some fresh light on the first beginnings of monetary and weight systems." - from Preface. Designed for sailing in the Ionian islands and covering the west coast of Greece, Crete, rhodes, cyprus and the South coast of Turkey. As well as all the practical navigational details it is full of fascinating details of the places, including descriptions of traditional local sailing craft. "This sea-guide replaces the second edition of The Ionian Islands to Rhodes and Southern Turkey, The Levant and Cyprus. One of the merits of this revised and enlarged volume is the comprehensive coverage it gives of a fascinating cruising area that extends from Corfu in northwest Greece to Cyprus and the coastline of Anatolia in the east. For active yachtsman or armchair voyager Henry Denham is an enlightening and invaluable companion for a cruise south from Corfu to the other Ionian Islands - Cephalonia, Ithaca, Zante - with a diversion into the Gulfs of Pátras and Corinth, reviving memories of Lord Byron at Missolonghi and Saint Andrew at Pátras. Then, south again by the western shores of the Peloponnesus to southern Crete, thence eastwards to Rhodes and Cyprus and adventuring still further into the waters of the least-known part of the eastern Mediterranean to explore the magnificent coastline of southern Turkey. Yachtsmen know that in a Denham sea-guide they will find not only detailed advice on cruising, pilotage, prohibited areas, port formalities, berthing, laying-up facilities and supplies but also a wealth of historical and archaeological information about places and ancient sites en route."224 p.Illus. maps. charts.
