The first edition.A journal kept by Richard Doyle in his youth in the year 1840. Doyle kept this journal in his teen years just a few years before he joined the staff of 'Punch'.Illustrated by Doyle throughout and with a portrait frontispiece.Doyle was an eminent illustrator of the Victorian era known for his contributions for 'Punch' for which he designed the masthead which was used for over a century.With an introduction by J. Hungerford Pollen. In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally smart with a little discolouration to the spine and extremities of the boards. Minor bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities. A few light marks to the boards and spine. Front hinge is starting but firm. Internally firmly bound. He later became the editor and publisher of "The Southern Home Journal" a weekly in Baltimore. This novel "is a thinly veiled story of a murder in the family of a Chief Justice of the Supreme Court and is interspersed with many short stories including quite a collection of ghost stories."
