Corners lightly scuffed chip at foot of spine board edges a little darkened inscription 1898 on front free endpaper some spots and marks on pages otherwise a tight copy good. Publisher's catalogue dated July 1896 bound in at end. An unusual outlier in Mrs Hungerford's oeuvre: a novel which is now classified as science fiction. A "mad scientist" induces a young Irish girl to take experimental drugs which causes her to fall into a deep coma or die and come back tot life depending on your viewpoint. Good. 8vo 369 pages heavily embossed dark blue cloth yellow glazed free endpaper re-attached <br/><br/>Eastern Maryland in the 1830s. Wright AMERICAN FICTION lists this at no. 1304 but Sabin no. 33833 lists it more historically. Hungerford was born on "The Old Plantation" in Calvert County Maryland in 1814. He later became the editor and publisher of "The Southern Home Journal" a weekly in Baltimore. This novel "is a thinly veiled story of a murder in the family of a Chief Justice of the Supreme Court and is interspersed with many short stories including quite a collection of ghost stories." Chapter XIV is " 'Colored' Characters ". Chapter XVI " Mesbach " covers Negro Superstitions The African Prince. Chapter XIX has Negro Nick-names. Chapters XXI-XXV are St. Joseph's Ghost-Stories. Chapter XXVIII has Negro Boat-Songs More Music Negro Satire. Chapter XXIX has The Juber Dance and Negro Moonlight Sports. Chapter L is " The Runaway ". Several chapters cover The Mulatto Wood-cutter. Binding is rubbed at extremities embossed title lettering on spine is dull with light wear at base of spine and tips of corners front hinge is just started due to delicate floral endpapers text is evenly tanned due to quality of paper with small faint stain on fore-edge of last few page of text else a tight very good copy. This collected edition with three titles in one volume is unrecorded by OCLC which does note three holdings of 'The Haunted Chamber' separately printed by this publisher. Irish novelist Margaret Wolfe Hungerford was born in Cork Ireland; her father was Canon Fitzjohn Stannus Hamiltion rector at St. Faughnan's cathedral in Rosscarbery. She wrote more than thirty novels including Molly Bawn 1878; many of her novels were published anonymously or under her pseudonym "The Duchess" see Welch. Oxford Companion to Irish Literature p. 253.
