La gutapercha, uno de los primeros plásticos naturales explotados por la revolución industrial, fue introducido en Occidente por el Doctor William Montgomerie en 1843 con el envío de muestras de dicha resina desde Singapur a la Royal Society of Arts en Londres, donde Michael Faraday y Bewley desarrollaron sus posibilidades tecnológicas y comerciales. En 1850 el primer cable submarino, con recubrimiento de gutapercha, fué tendido y para finales del siglo 250.000 millas de cable con gutapercha se hallaban en uso. Tardará cien años en ser sustituído por el polietileno. Cabe recordar también los numerosos aspectos de la vida victoriana inglesa y europea finisecular en los que influyó la gutapercha: desde las pelotas de golf, donde fue una gran revolución sustituyendo a las anticuadas pelotas escocesas de plumas y cuero, inservibles con las lluvias, a los objetos decorativos moldeados o los empastes de los dentistas. La demanda hizo avanzar su cultivo, de Asia a la América francófona.
