Come un richiamo ancestrale, il sonaglio sacro del vudù fende l'aria con un suono ipnotico, rauco o stridulo, che si ripete prolungato, si unisce ai versi degli animali e rincorre l'oscurità per raggiungere un altro universo: quello dei morti. È un oggetto di fabbricazione semplice: una zucca la cui cavità viene riempita di ossa di serpenti e la cui superficie viene adornata con perle che mollemente ne ricalcano i contorni. Solo lo houngan, il sacerdote, può utilizzarlo. Quando Maya Deren nel 1947 da New York approda a Haiti, il vudù è ancora la religione dominante, e lei una giovane regista di film sperimentali e d'avanguardia. Il suo sguardo di artista viene catturato subito da quel conturbante pantheon di divinità, e Maya Deren si trova presto coinvolta nei riti notturni. Dopo i canti di apertura, gli inchini e i passi tradizionali, vede lo houngan intonare l'invocazione a Damballah, il grande dio serpente. Tra i bagliori dei fuochi sente levarsi i tamburi. Assiste a una danza simile all'acqua, in cui i corpi, fluttuando, si chinano lentamente verso terra, convergendo al centro come un'unica, magica corrente. Ma Maya Deren non si limita a osservare: alla fine del suo percorso iniziatico sperimenta la possessione, e le viene assegnato uno spirito guida, Erzulie, la divinità dell'amore. Secondo il vudù, infatti, lo spirito che è in ciascuno di noi non perisce insieme al corpo, ma può diventare un loa, uno spirito sacro, e sostituirsi temporaneamente a chi è ancora in vita attraverso la possessione: è allora che i cavalieri divini si impadroniscono dell'iniziato e lo cavalcano. Il prescelto può così accedere alla quinta dimensione, quella dell'eternità, diventare «pieno di dio» e ricreare in Terra il suo paradiso, ricevendo dalle divinità ispirazione, cura e consiglio. Con "I cavalieri divini del vudù", arricchito della prefazione di Joseph Campbell, il Saggiatore restituisce al lettore una delle testimonianze a oggi più esaurienti sulla ritualità haitiana. Maya Deren, discostandosi dall'approccio dell'antropologia tradizionale e iniziandoci ai misteri dell'armonia cosmica, trascrive una realtà che, come ogni archetipo mitologico, vive nel cuore di ogni essere umano.
