La ribellione degli schiavi scoppiata nell'agosto del 1791 nella colonia francese di Santo Domingo, con cui si indica convenzionalmente l'inizio della Rivoluzione haitiana, distrusse l'ordine coloniale fondato sulla schiavitù e le gerarchie razziali, già minato dalla lotta dei liberi di colore che dal 1789 rivendicavano l'inclusione nei diritti di cittadinanza sanciti dalla Rivoluzione francese. L'insorgenza degli schiavi costrinse la Repubblica giacobina ad abolire la schiavitù nel 1793-94. In seguito, il tentativo di Napoleone di riprendere il controllo della colonia e reintrodurre la schiavitù, segnato anche dalla destituzione del generale e leader politico Toussaint Louverture, trasformò la rivoluzione in una guerra anticoloniale per l'indipendenza nazionale, conclusa nel 1804 con la nascita di Haiti, unico Stato delle Americhe governato da uomini neri e in cui la proprietà privata di esseri umani e la disuguaglianza fra le razze erano formalmente abolite. Il libro propone una selezione di testi che permettono di ricostruire il pensiero politico espresso dai diversi soggetti che animarono la Rivoluzione: dalla lotta dei liberi di colore all'insurrezione degli schiavi, dall'ascesa politica e militare di Toussaint Louverture fino alla guerra d'indipendenza. L'antologia rende così la complessità della Rivoluzione, percorsa anche da numerose lotte interne che condizionarono la storia di Haiti per tutto l'Ottocento, in particolare il conflitto tra l'élite rivoluzionaria, intenzionata a mantenere il sistema di piantagione, e gli ex schiavi africani, che continuarono a insorgere contro le nuove forme di lavoro forzato.
