FIRST AND ONLY EDITION of this translation of the Lives of the Saints into Mangareva (or Mangarevan). 519 pp. PRINTED ENTIRELY IN MANGAREVA (the title-page has a few words in French, as transcribed above). Janeau (1859-1944) was a picpucien missionary in French Polynesia. Printed on very good wove paper. This volume covers the saints whose days fall through June 30; the second volume was never published. Small 8vo. Bound in original cloth-backed boards. Decorative endpapers. Boards a bit worn, but still structurally solid. Internally FINE AND BRIGHT, with no defects. EXTREMELY RARE: WorldCat locates only two copies, both in the South Pacific (Oceania and Hawaii).
