Scarce in commerce. <br/><br/>"On June 30th the first group of Canadian students will leave from Eastern Canada for Cuba where they will spend from six to eight weeks working with and talking to Cubans from all walks of life. The second group leaves on July 3rd from points west of Winnipeg and will join up in Mexico City before proceeding to Havana. A total of 45 students will participate in the program and will be led by Captain David Middleton a retired Canadian army officer. The group are representative of Canadian university students from Fredericton and Halifax on the east coast to Victoria on the west coast. Th students represent fifteen campuses in eight provinces and courses in engineering science accountancy medicine political science philosophy liberal arts psychology sociology law school teaching library and theology. Some of the students are in post-graduate studies. The objective of the tour is two-fold: to work as a group on some project or projects alongside Cubans thereby creating a bond of friendship leading to a better understanding between Cubans and Canadians and secondly to provide an opportunity for the group to assess the Cuban experiment in social reconstruction." Debray a Paris-trained philosopher and former professor at the University of Havana was arrested as an associate of Che Guevara in August 1967 and sentenced to 30 years in prison; he was released in 1970 after sustained protests. <br /> <br />Photos show Debray in prison uniform on August 8th; in civilian clothes in front of a bank of microphones at an August 14 press conference following a hunger strike; walking in the prison yard escorted by an armed guard; and with his wife Elizabeth Burgos after his release. Toned cheap newsprint. A special edition of the Gaceta Oficial of Communist Cuba devoted to the printing of the First Agrarian Reform Law passed and signed on May 17 1959. The law effected the first major land redistribution under Fidel Castro and the Communist Party. Under its authority all properties were over 420 hectares were confiscated and redistributed to the people and native businesses. Prior to the law over 80% of Cuban land was owned by foreign mostly American companies. The preamble and sixty-seven articles lay out the motivations for the law the parameters for confiscation by the Department of Agriculture the mechanisms for seizure and redistribution and the creation of a new government organization to facilitate the land transfers the Instituto Nacional de Reforma Agraria. Signed in print by Fidel as Prime Minister Manuel Urrutia Lleo as President and a slew of other officials. June 3 unknown
