1932021730Calvert TX: Calvert Colored High School Publisher 1932. Wraps. Good. Single sheet folded into four pages 8 ½ by 5 ½ inches. Cover mentions day and location of the commencement May 23rd at the WW.O.W. Temple. Interior lists the names of the senior class students as well as class officers Board of Education members and faculty members. The Calvert Colored High School was built in 1929 with aid from the Rosenwald School Fund. It was originally named Calvert County Training School. This school was a step toward providing real education to Black students in the area as most of the students at that time attended "plantation" schools until they were old enough to work in the fields. The school offered vocational training although apparently focusing on skills that would not conflict with occupations commonly held by white people Texas State Historical Landmark text. The school changed its name to the W.D. Spigner High School in 1961 named after its long time headmaster. GOOD condition. Appears to have been removed from a scrapbook or photobook as there are large areas of black paper adhered to the blank rear page. Horizontal fold crease present. Minor toning wrinkling and creasing. Moderate browning some soiling and staining to the covers. Heavy scuffing chipping creasing and tearing along the extremities with a large tear at the lower rear hinge. Several creases to the jacket. 1962009039Montpelier VT: Myrtle Lane presumed Publisher 1962. Wraps. Good. Reproduced printed type 8 ½ by 11 inches. Stapled at the upper left corner. 16 pp. including covers. Devoted to peace as the title indicates this issue of the journal provides lengthy commentary on the then fresh in the news Cuban Missile Crisis. Included is a tally for President Kennedy versus Krushchev Castro and the peace movement grading Kennedy a scorn-filled A for his role in bringing the world closer to war. A several page account of peace rallies and demonstrations is provided with quotes from various speakers including Bayard Rustin and Dagmar Wilson. Statements from various organizations regarding the crisis are printed as well as reports from England Poland and Czechoslovakia. Most work attributed to Myrtle Lane or Marjory Collins with one by Virginia Colter and others. The Peace Concern was a newsletter devoted to promoting peace and seeking an active participation in the peace movement founded by Myrtle Lane and Marjory Collins. Collins was a noted photojournalist as well as a prominent activist in various social and progressive causes including the Civil Rights movement see Library of Congress website. GOOD condition seemingly ex-institution with date stamp and notations present. Handwritten mailing address postage stamp and cancellations on the rear blank page with several dark brown tape burns. Each measures 6 ¼ by 3 inches. Printed on thick card stock of varying colors. A collection of twelve ink blotters featuring art created by grade school children in Brockton Massachusetts. Each card features two small black and white silhouette style illustrations with the name and grade of the artist. Quite impressive art for children who were in grades 1 through 6. Blotters themselves in VERY GOOD condition with minor toning and edgewear. Wrapper holding them with some toning fading wrinkling creasing and minor soiling. 1978020846Trenton NJ: Land-Lord's presumed Publisher 1978. Unbound. Good. Single sheet 8 ½ by 12 1/8 inches. Thin paper stock. Printed on a single side only. A flyer for a disco and awards event held by the Land-Lord's Chapter 2 Motorcycle Club in Trenton New Jersey on December 9th 1978. With an upper center illustration of what is presumed to be the club's emblem. The event featured a disco raffles for money and ½ gallons of alcohol awards for most represented club farthest distance club best dressed hog best dressed chopper etc. Unfortunately not much could be found out about this club except that they enjoyed disco and a funky good time. GOOD condition. Many horizontal and vertical fold creases present with other wrinkling and creasing. Moderate soiling and some staining especially to the reverse. Light general fading. 1956021525No Place: No publisher 1956. Unbound. Good. Various places and dates. Dates range from April 25 1956 to June 27 1956. 14 leaves printed on single sides only. It appears most are copies of originals but a few may be original as well. All these letters stem from a proposal letter written by Ambassador Whiting Willauer to his friend and insurance executive from whose estate these came. Willauer mentions his troubles with some Chinese refugees he sponsored which made him ponder the possibility for some sort of insurance for sponsors of refugees to cover financial losses in case the refugees are not able to fulfill their obligations stipulated in the Refugee Act of 1953. The letters are between other US insurance executives pondering options and feasibility with the eventual conclusion that the proposal was not practical. The act itself was meant to accommodate 200000 refugees affected by communism. The earliest letter is from US Ambassador Whiting Willauer on "The Foreign Service of the United States of America" letterhead and apparently written from Honduras where Willauer was serving at the time. Notably Willauer along with Claire Chennault established the Civilian Air Transport Company in China in 1946 selling it to the CIA in 1950 although not resigning from the company until 1954. At this time he became ambassador to Honduras and worked directly with the CIA in Guatemala in support of their operation to overthrow its government led by Jacobo Arbenz Guzman see Wikipedia for previous information-or misinformation. Willauer's letter does bear a signature but we have not authenticated it in any way. These are from an executive of a very large international insurance firm name of owner and firm withheld for privacy. The owner was a highly placed executive in an insurance company and travelled throughout the world extensively. They were active in politics through donations and fundraising and it appears their family was friendly with the Roosevelts especially Eleanor Roosevelt. The previous owner's work for the insurance company led them to meet with various heads of state worldwide including US government officials. Some of the people associated with this firm were also involved in World War II activities including financing the Flying Tigers in China as well as work for the OSS using knowledge gained from insurance work. While we have not found any direct connection to intelligence work by this owner their ties to those who did are strong. GOOD condition. Letters mounted by metal clip in a manila folder. Some wrinkling to the letters with a few handwritten notes to some of them. No publisher unknown

Front cover art by Winsor McCay the noted American cartoonist illustrator and "father" of American animation. A program for the 1909-1910 season of shows at the New York Hippodrome featuring a ballet depicting life in Japan as well as some photos of Maori who were featured in the show as well. Unfortunately their photos are captioned with rather crude language usage indicating they were "imported" for the show. GOOD condition. Faint vertical fold crease present. Minor wrinkling and creasing to the covers. Some toning soiling to the covers with two faint ring stains to the rear cover along with some other minor areas of discoloration. A collection of paper dolls featuring women who served in World War II as WACS or WAVES featuring 8 women and a variety of clothing and uniforms. The WACS and WAVES were units associated with the US Army and US Navy that allowed women to serve in the military in noncombat roles. POOR/FAIR condition. Top third of the front cover CUT UP missing the title and the stars that were once present. The book is otherwise intact with all dolls and clothing present and uncut. 1958020407New York: Henry Street Settlement presumed Publisher 1958. Wraps. Good. Illustrated wraps. 52 pp. Printed on single sides only. A detailed report by Ruth S. Tefferteller detailing the efforts of the Pre-Delinquent Gang Project at the Henry Street Settlement in New York. The report explains in depth the formation of groups such as the Lucky Seven of children divided by age. The programs work and notable incidents regarding each group are included such as police encounters among the older group. Names of the children are mentioned in some instances as well as general statistics such as race. Tefferteller worked for 21 years at the Henry Street Settlement in a variety of roles that promoted social welfare among lower income children and families. The Henry Street Settlement was established in 1893 to offer assistance to those in need primarily in the Lower East Side of New York. GOOD condition. Black and white photos throughout as well as one apparent painted photo by Karl Moon. Single issue of this monthly magazine this one relying heavily on photographs. Of note are a series of 14 Photographs by Carl moon an American photographer perhaps best known for his photographs of Native Americans. These photos depict Native Americans living in the Taos New Mexico area and are reminiscent of the work by Edward Curtis. While some critics have acclaimed his work for its documentation of Native American life the work seems to mythologize the false concept of the disappearance of Native Americans in the US. The article concludes "we are loath to confess that in the final count it is best that man's progress in the cultivation of land should be unchecked and our reluctance lies in the fact that this change must toll the knell of the Redman's sic day." Among the other photos in the book are photos of celebrities and of the Hudson-Fulton celebration in New York. Included in these photos is one depicting Wilbur Wright flying over Governor's Island in New York. His flight that day included the first over water and the canoe that he mounted underneath the airplane as a precaution against a water landing can be seen in the photo. FAIR condition. Frontispiece illustration haphazardly cut out of the magazine. Very heavy scuffing chipping creasing tearing and loss to the covers along the extremities with most of the spine missing. Some creasing soiling and staining to the covers with superficial paper loss to the rear cover. Large faint pencil circle present to the front cover. With a large peace symbol slightly resembling a skull and outlined in a red omega symbol used by resisters to the Vietnam War. GOOD condition. Minor toning. Printed wraps. 145 7 pp. A few black and white illustrations throughout reprints of illustrations from issues of The Black Panther Party. A supposedly "analytical" report on the Black Panther Party discussing its origins ideology and methodology in achieving its aims. The work cites the words of Black Panther Party leaders and ex-members and subtly seeks to tie the party to foreign groups communists seeking to overthrow the US government while ignoring the facts in some cases such as the murder of Fred Hampton that would portray the US government in a poor light. The report was issued by the Committee on Internal Security formerly known as the House of Un-American Activities Committee chaired by Richard Ichord a staunch anti-communist. GOOD condition.
