A collection of statements issued by the legislature of Texas rejecting the Wilmot Proviso that would have excluded slavery from territories acquired during the Mexican-American War. The authors consider slavery to be a "domestic institution" of the United States and state that they would "not submit to any law which prohibits the citizens of the southern states from taking their property to any territory which may be acquired from Mexico." The document urges support for the war through tariffs and other means. GOOD condition. Minor to moderate uneven foxing. Some creasing and roughness along the spine edge. Best known as a surveyor he also taught arithmetic and wrote this guide to simplify his classes. GOOD condition ex-library. Exterior call label interior pastedowns and markings present. Several areas of ink staining to the covers with minor soiling and fading. Leather worn along the spine with the other extremities rather bumped scuffed and frayed. Fourth issue of this short lived periodical attempting to pick up where Vanity Fair left off. Some of those associated with the journal had worked on Vanity Fair. Mrs. Grundy played a critical observer on the American political scene and supported the Reconstruction as envisioned by Andrew Johnson. The journal ran for a total of 12 issues before closing due to a lack of subscribers. Political satire and commentary throughout including a poem written in dialect from the point of view of an African-American who feels abandoned by the US government. Also present is a full page illustration by Thomas Nast titled "Death on the Rails." POOR condition. Slightly ex-library with faint blindstamp on the front cover. The whole journal is very fragile and brittle with all pages DETACHED from each other. Moderate toning some soiling and moderate to heavy chipping and tearing along the edges. Printed wraps although MISSING rear wrap. 126 pp. A printing of arguments rebuttals and statements against the trustees of the Dudley Observatory in New York defending the character of Benjamin Gould astronomer and assailing the trustees' actions. This controversy arose over a conflict in the building of the observatory with the appointed council of scientists and advisors advocating a suspension in building activities until the financial aspects were straightened out while the appointed trustees advocated a continuation of operations. This resulted in Gould being dismissed by the trustees with the council refusing to recognize this dismissal leading to Gould occupying the observatory until evicted see Dudley Observatory's website for a history of this controversy. FAIR/GOOD condition LACKING the rear wrap. Ex-library with a few blindstamps to the paper in the interior. Moderate darkening minor soiling and staining to the front wrap with creasing and wrinkling present as well as minor chipping and loss along the edges. Single issue of this journal this featuring a full page front cover political cartoon by Thomas Nast. Titled "The Political Niagara-A Drowning Man Catches at a Straw" the work depicts the Democratic Party just about to go over the falls grasping at a cane that bears the head of an African American man with a sign to the write mentioning the S.P. Chase as their candidate for president. A US flag in the distance reads Grant/Colfax. Nasr and Harper's were politically aligned with Lincoln and his Republican Party with Nast perhaps alluding to African Americans as a way to gain political salvation for the Democratic Party. Interior features a part of "The Moonstone" by Wilkie Collins as well as a large illustration accompanying an article detailing a duel between two African American men near Savannah Georgia but apparently in South Carolina. The duel was between Jackson Brand and Eugene Moorehead as the result of alleged political loyalties. Moorehead apparently was part of a conservative group to which Jackson Brand had recently joined having previously been a Republican. A duel with shotguns was fought with Brand mortally wounded. FAIR/GOOD condition. Horizontal fold crease present. Moderate toning with some soiling and offsetting. Some chipping and tearing mostly along the fore edge. Pages 411-416 with a 2 inch triangular piece torn off from the fore edge affecting some text. Pages 407-416 have a tear at the upper middle right small at first and increasing larger toward the end affecting text and illustrations in that area. Harper and Brothers unknown
