1935biblio10<p>John Henry Nash 1871-1947 American printer and bibliophile born Woodbridge Canada. After learning the printer's trade he emigrated to the United States in 1894. He eventually became professor of typography at the University of Oregon. A vital and vigorous personality in American printing he made beautiful books in Calfornia under patronage which has permitted him to work without too much consideration fo limits of time materials and expense. All of Nash's books are collectors items and are highlighted in a 1932 edition by Lakeside Press ranking Nash's books amongst the best printers and binders since William Morris.<br /><br />Jesse Benton Fremont: A Woman Who Made History By Catherine Coffin Phillips. Jacket showing a bit of dust stains otherwise fine. Illustrations in black and white with some in color. xviii 148 pp. Quarto 9 x 12 1/2 inches tall. O'Crouley's description of New Spain in the eighteenth century is a valuable contribution to scholarship mostly unknown until the late twentieth century when it was published. The original manuscript comprises 202 leaves bound in red leather in the Biblioteca Nacional de Madrid Ms. 972.02. It was published in English in 1972 as A Description of the Kingdom of New Spain by Sr. Dn. Pedro Alonso O'Crouley 1774.Once published it was widely reviewed in the scholarly literature. In 1975 it was published in a facsimile edition. For the English edition the translator Galvin rearranged some of the text to produce a more readable work. One scholar criticized this saying "This is a disservice to the text since part of its overall significance as an 'enlightened' compendium resides precisely in its structure as a miscellany." -- Wikipedia The volume is richly illustrated. He drew native plants and flowers cacao vanilla avocado sapote mamey passion flower and pricky pear cactus as well as animals not known in Europe. What has gained most attention are his depictions of race mixture castas which have been published in works on that topic. O'Crouley provides written text for the illustrations which were likely copies of existing casta groupings. He devotes an entire section of text to the condition of the Indians lamenting their current state. Unlike many casta paintings that show scenes of imagined everyday life of the racial types O'Crouley's lack any further context.11 He wrote short descriptions of New Spain's principal cities the capital Mexico City the second largest city Puebla; Valladolid now Morelia; Oaxaca; Guadalajara; Durango; Acapulco; and Veracruz. He travelled north to presidios of Los Adáes in Texas; El Paso del Norte; and the province of Nayarit. His description of New Mexico is considerably longer than the places coming before it. Also lengthy is the chapter on his voyage up the Gulf of California; his description of California itself; and an expedition to Nueva Andalucía Sinaloa and Sonora. John Howell--Books hardcover books

1961019792No Place: No Publisher 1961. Unbound. Good. John F. Kennedy Inaugural Ball Account in Letter. Two pages printed on single sides only. Thin yellow paper presumably a copy of the original produced at the same time as the original as the previous owner seemingly kept copies of all correspondence. From an executive of a very large international insurance firm name of owner and firm withheld for privacy. The previous owner saved these items for an apparent planned scrapbook mounting most on paper with either glue or staples. The owner was a highly placed executive in an insurance company and travelled throughout the world extensively. They were active in politics through donations and fundraising and it appears their family was friendly with the Roosevelts especially Eleanor Roosevelt. The previous owner's work for the insurance company led them to meet with various heads of state worldwide including US government officials. Some of the people associated with this firm were also involved in World War II activities including financing the Flying Tigers in China as well as work for the OSS using knowledge gained from insurance work. While we have not found any direct connection to intelligence work by this owner their ties to those who did are strong. NB: we are starting the process of cataloguing four boxes of material from this individual both personal and business correspondence. More information on the collection available on request. Previous owner is the same as the above item. This letter dated January 24 1961 details their arrival back in New York to who is presumed to be their spouse. After a few paragraphs about family matters the letter describes the owner's efforts to an inauguration event at the Statler Hotel/National Armory that was made extremely difficult by a bad snowstorm. Mentioned are performers such as Frank Sinatra Harry Belafonte Nat King Cole and others. The author then mentions attending one of five inaugural balls stating it was much like the Eisenhower Inaugural Ball but more crowded. Apparently Jackie Kennedy was too tired at this point to attend but JFK was "full of fire." The letter goes on with details about guests/friends and other personal matters. GOOD condition. Two binding holes punched at the top edge. Minor wrinkling. Pencil initials at the top of the first page. No Publisher unknown
1916020763Gainesville FL: Pepper Publishing and Printing Co 1916. Unbound. Good. Single sheet 18 by 10 inches folded to 3 3/8 by 6 inches with printing on what is essentially six panels. Several black and white photos present including several of the steamboat Hiawatha. A booklet promoting steamboat trips on the Ocklawaha River in Florida a narrow twisting river that required specially designed steamboats for its navigation. Presumably started by Hubbard L. Hart the Ocklawaha Steamboat Company was probably the last iteration of the original company that was founded in 1865. Hart ran steamboats for the Confederacy during the Civil War helping to avoid Union blockades. The steamboats disappeared by the 1920s replaced by motor powered boats. GOOD condition. 1919019692St. Joseph MO: Progressive Numbers presumed Publisher 1919. Unbound. Good. Single sheet folded into 4 pages making a small booklet. Printed on card stock. A program for an event held by what appears to have been an African American fraternal or social organization. The event was held May 15th 1919. The event started at 8:45 pm with food served promptly at 9:30. The invocation was led by Reverend E.M. Cohron and it appears the poem "At the Closed Gates of Justice" by James D. Corrothers was read cited by its first line "To be a Negro on a Day Like This." Another address "Where Ethiopia Should Stretch Forth Her Hands" was also given. Honorary members of Progressive Numbers are listed including Rev. J.A. Gregg Richard B. Harrison and Clarence Cameron White. List of last names and first initials of 12 members also present. While we could find nothing identifying this organization its motto is "Onward Upward" and its colors are lavender and cream. GOOD condition. Moderate toning and minor soiling. A program of events for a convention held by the Fashion League of America listing the board of directors members of various committees etc. as well as a list of talks and fashion shows to be held. This includes an opening fashion show and one displaying French fashions. Talks look at the business side of dressmaking and fashion. The Fashion Art League of America was founded by Alla Ripley Bannister in 1913 after she became president of the Chicago Dressmakers Club and reorganized it. Going by her professional name Madame Ripley she was influential in promoting fashion as an art and establishing it as a business for women at a time when women were expected to give up work once married. She took part in a 1913 fashion show in Chicago that featured dresses and clothing inspired by European Cubism and worked throughout her career to promote American fashion as equal or superior to French fashions see The Beverly Review Sept. 17 2019 article for previous information. San Francisco Printed by John Henry Nash. 1938.</p><p>Only 650 Copies were printed and bound. 35 pages including introduction and actual speech. Some cover wear and jacket tear but otherwise this is a book in exceptional condition. The California Pious Fund started in the late 1600's and was used by the Jesuits Dominicans and Franciscans to set up and run the California missions up and down the coast of California. Potential invasions from Russia French and Americans in the 1830's and some earlier instances the fund was used to support the military defense of California. When Santa Ana confiscated the fund and demanded that all the missions and mission properties be sold in the 1840's the fund nearly collapsed however a rejuvenation of legal action against the government of Mexico to recover the proceeds of the fund to help support the missions which were still operating but not as a military defense system in the 1860's. An important piece of California history a very nice and somewhat rare book.</p> Nash, John hardcover
