1952009919No Place: United States Lines Publisher 1952. Unbound. Good. Stated Preliminary March 1952 Reprint. A large fold out brochure measuring approximately 48 by 9 inches when unfolded. Consisting of several pages stapled at the middle this presents a detailed floor plan of first class cabins and amenities on the cruise ship S.S. United States. With short advertising copy and information about the 'state of the art' aspects of the ship. The S.S. United States was a passenger cruise ship designed to US Navy specifications and subsidized by the US government as it was to be used as a troop transport ship in wartime should the need arise. It achieved speed records in crossing the Atlantic and was in service from July 1952 to 1969. GOOD condition. 1956021525No Place: No publisher 1956. Unbound. Good. Various places and dates. Dates range from April 25 1956 to June 27 1956. 14 leaves printed on single sides only. It appears most are copies of originals but a few may be original as well. All these letters stem from a proposal letter written by Ambassador Whiting Willauer to his friend and insurance executive from whose estate these came. Willauer mentions his troubles with some Chinese refugees he sponsored which made him ponder the possibility for some sort of insurance for sponsors of refugees to cover financial losses in case the refugees are not able to fulfill their obligations stipulated in the Refugee Act of 1953. The letters are between other US insurance executives pondering options and feasibility with the eventual conclusion that the proposal was not practical. The act itself was meant to accommodate 200000 refugees affected by communism. The earliest letter is from US Ambassador Whiting Willauer on "The Foreign Service of the United States of America" letterhead and apparently written from Honduras where Willauer was serving at the time. Notably Willauer along with Claire Chennault established the Civilian Air Transport Company in China in 1946 selling it to the CIA in 1950 although not resigning from the company until 1954. At this time he became ambassador to Honduras and worked directly with the CIA in Guatemala in support of their operation to overthrow its government led by Jacobo Arbenz Guzman see Wikipedia for previous information-or misinformation. Willauer's letter does bear a signature but we have not authenticated it in any way. These are from an executive of a very large international insurance firm name of owner and firm withheld for privacy. The owner was a highly placed executive in an insurance company and travelled throughout the world extensively. They were active in politics through donations and fundraising and it appears their family was friendly with the Roosevelts especially Eleanor Roosevelt. The previous owner's work for the insurance company led them to meet with various heads of state worldwide including US government officials. Some of the people associated with this firm were also involved in World War II activities including financing the Flying Tigers in China as well as work for the OSS using knowledge gained from insurance work. While we have not found any direct connection to intelligence work by this owner their ties to those who did are strong. GOOD condition. Letters mounted by metal clip in a manila folder. Some wrinkling to the letters with a few handwritten notes to some of them. No publisher unknown

Devoted to peace as the title indicates this issue of the journal provides lengthy commentary on the then fresh in the news Cuban Missile Crisis. Included is a tally for President Kennedy versus Krushchev Castro and the peace movement grading Kennedy a scorn-filled A for his role in bringing the world closer to war. A several page account of peace rallies and demonstrations is provided with quotes from various speakers including Bayard Rustin and Dagmar Wilson. Statements from various organizations regarding the crisis are printed as well as reports from England Poland and Czechoslovakia. Most work attributed to Myrtle Lane or Marjory Collins with one by Virginia Colter and others. The Peace Concern was a newsletter devoted to promoting peace and seeking an active participation in the peace movement founded by Myrtle Lane and Marjory Collins. Collins was a noted photojournalist as well as a prominent activist in various social and progressive causes including the Civil Rights movement see Library of Congress website. GOOD condition seemingly ex-institution with date stamp and notations present. Handwritten mailing address postage stamp and cancellations on the rear blank page with several dark brown tape burns. The booklet contains a short history of the Panama Canal as well as extensive descriptions of the the Exposition itself including the buildings and palaces for the event. It also describes places to visit in San Francisco and California. Includes color illustrations of buildings black and white photos of places in Yosemite the California coast etc. Inside front cover with a bird's eye view map of the Panama Canal region with a bird's eye view map of San Francisco and beyond in the rear. The Panama Pacific International Exposition San Francisco was essentially a World's Fair that while touted as celebrating the opening of the canal also promoted the rebuild of San Francisco after the 1906 earthquake. 1916020763Gainesville FL: Pepper Publishing and Printing Co 1916. Unbound. Good. Single sheet 18 by 10 inches folded to 3 3/8 by 6 inches with printing on what is essentially six panels. Several black and white photos present including several of the steamboat Hiawatha. A booklet promoting steamboat trips on the Ocklawaha River in Florida a narrow twisting river that required specially designed steamboats for its navigation. Presumably started by Hubbard L. Hart the Ocklawaha Steamboat Company was probably the last iteration of the original company that was founded in 1865. Hart ran steamboats for the Confederacy during the Civil War helping to avoid Union blockades. The steamboats disappeared by the 1920s replaced by motor powered boats. GOOD condition. Frontis. xxxvi 351 pp. including index. Octavo 6 x 9 inches tall textblock. Baltasar Obregón born 1534 was a 16th-century Spanish explorer and historian. He is most notable for publishing the Historia de los descubrimientos de Nueva Espana an account of his travels in the New World. Obregón was born the son of an encomendera in the Spanish colony of New Spain. At the age of 19 Obregón joined up with a Spanish expedition to California from which he returned with travel experience. In 1554 at the age of 20 he joined the expedition of Francisco de Ibarra to explore the frontiers of Spanish territory and to secure mineral resources. The expedition was a success founding several settlements and allowing the Spanish to colonize Zacatecas. Later in life Obregón published an account of his travels the Historia de los descubrimientos de Nueva Espana in which he described the landscape of northern Mexico. The Mission of Guevavi on the Santa Cruz River in what is now southern Arizona served as a focal point of Jesuit missionary endeavor among the Pima Indians on New Spain's far northwestern frontier. For three-quarters of a century from the first visit by the renowned Eusebio Francisco Kino in 1691 until the Jesuit Expulsion in 1767 the difficult process of replacing one culture with anotherthe heart of the Spanish mission systemwent on at Guevavi. Yet all but the initial years presided over by Father Kino have been forgotten. Drawing upon archival materials in Mexico Spain and the United Statesincluding accounts by the missionaries themselves and the surviving pages of the Guevavi record booksKessell brings to life those forgotten years and forgotten men who struggled to transform a native ranchería into an ordered mission community. Thomas McCurdy Vincent was a brevet brigadier general in the US Army serving as an assistant adjutant general for McDowell at the Battle of Bull Run. This work offers a brief but detailed account of that battle drawing on other sources government records and quotes as well as the author's experiences.
