The images may have been suggested by a story "The Birthday Doll" which precedes the Sendak illustration although Maurice has re-imagined the scenario to make it entirely his own. The images are brilliant and demonstrate the importance of sharing. The actual drawing measures 10-3/4 x 8 inches on larger paper matted with UV Protective clear museum-glass in a wooden frame.<br /><br />This original pencil study was given by the artist to his close friend Lynn Caponera and acquired directly from her. The finished watercolor is in the permanent collection of Marlo Thomas. Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers books
