The biography gave its title to the 1931 compilation film made to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Paramount. 293 pp. Blue cloth. Light edge wear rear board slightly dented with a small tear to the final endpaper; otherwise overall in fine condition. <br style="">The French actor cabaret singer and entertainer Maurice Chevalier is perhaps best known for his signature songs including "Louise" "Mimi" "Valentine" and "Thank Heaven for Little Girls" and for his films including The Love Parade and The Big Pond. His trademark attire was a boater hat which he always wore on stage with a tuxedo. In 1958 he starred with Leslie Caron and Louis Jourdan in Gigi and in the early 1960s he made eight films including Can-Can in 1960 and Fanny the following year.  The success of Gigi prompted Hollywood to give him an Academy Honorary Award that year for achievements in entertainment. Doubleday, Doran, & Co. hardcover books

The basis for several films including the classic German silent film starring Conrad Veidt "Orlacs Hande" The Hands of Orlac 1924 and its American rival the sound version starring Peter Lorre "Mad Love" directed by emigre Karl Freund for MGM in 1935 and today considered one of the greatest horror films of the 1930s. <br/><br/>Near Fine in a Very Good dust jacket with the publisher's wraparound band "The Dutton Prize Mystery for November". Hardcover. book is lightly worn with a touch of dust-soiling and faint spotting on the top edge of the text block; the jacket alas is badly compromised due to a large chunk having been torn away from the top left corner of the front panel taking with it about half of the title. "Body horror" novel about the psychological havoc wrought upon a famous pianist when his hands mangled in an accident are surgically replaced by those of a recently-executed murderer. Originally published in France in 1920 the novel was first filmed as a 1924 silent in Austria directed by Robert Wiene of "Caligari" fame; subsequent movie versions acknowledging the source novel were MAD LOVE 1935 starring Colin Clive and Peter Lorre and THE HANDS OF ORLAC 1960 with Mel Ferrer and Christopher Lee. It was also unofficially remade without source attribution as HANDS OF A STRANGER 1962 and is often acknowledged as an inspiration for the 1946 thriller THE BEAST WITH FIVE FINGERS. Rare in the dust jacket this example of which apart from the noted large missing piece is virtually unworn and is a great candidate for professional restoration. Alternatively one could take the much less expensive approach of obtaining a beautiful facsimile of the original jacket from the well-known purveyor of such things; details upon request. . E.P.
