19554696Oxford: Routledge and Kegan Paul 1955. First edition. Octavo original cloth. Nobel Prize-winning economist Amartya Sen's copy with his name "A.K. Sen Trinity College Cambridge" on the half title page. Inscribed on the front free endpaper to Sen "For Amartiya With the confidence that he will plan the dynamic economy of a socialist and peaceful India. With best wishes Arif Cambridge 8 May 1955." In very good condition. In 1953 Sen entered Trinity College Cambridge where he earned a second B.A. in Economics in 1955 with a first class topping the list. He was elected President of the Cambridge Majlis. While Sen was officially a Ph.D. student at Cambridge though he had finished his research in 1955-6 he was offered the position of Professor and Head of the Economics Department of the newly created Jadavpur University in Calcutta and he became the youngest chairman to head the Department of Economics. He served in that position starting the new Economics Department during 1956 to 1958. Meanwhile Sen was elected to a Prize Fellowship at Trinity College which gave him four years of freedom to do anything he liked; he made the radical decision to study philosophy. Sen explained: "The broadening of my studies into philosophy was important for me not just because some of my main areas of interest in economics relate quite closely to philosophical disciplines for example social choice theory makes intense use of mathematical logic and also draws on moral philosophy and so does the study of inequality and deprivation but also because I found philosophical studies very rewarding on their own". His interest in philosophy however dates back to his college days at Presidency where he read books on philosophy and debated philosophical themes. In Cambridge there were major debates between supporters of Keynesian economics on the one hand and the "neo-classical" economists skeptical of Keynes on the other. However because of a lack of enthusiasm for social choice theory in both Trinity and Cambridge Sen had to choose a different subject for his Ph.D. thesis which was on "The Choice of Techniques" in 1959 though the work had been completed much earlier except for some valuable advice from his adjunct supervisor in India Professor A.K. Dasgupta given to Sen while teaching and revising his work at Jadavpur under the supervision of the "brilliant but vigorously intolerant" post-Keynesian Joan Robinson. Sen has went on to become one of the leading international voices on issues of famine welfare economics and human development theory as well as the social issues and inequalities that underlie those problems. 1961WRCLIT80658Paris: The Olympia Press 1961. Whole number one of four published. Quarto. Pictorial wrappers. Illustrated. Minor rubbing to wrapper but a very good copy. Edited by Maurice Girodias and Iris Owens. The periodical arm of the Olympia Press intended to showcase the coterie of authors who hovered around the imprint in Paris during the early '60s including a column by Terry Southern contributions by Burroughs Donleavy Durrell Daimler/Owens and others. Hounded by the French censors for reasons more political than prudish Girodias was able only to manage four issues over two years of what was intended as a monthly and then was forced to discontinue publication entirely. D1018Denham Bucks Buckinghamshire: The Brown House. Black cloth; 6.75" x 8.5"; approx. pp. 4 117 typed on the rectos only plus an illustrated title-page and 6 plates all drawn and colored by hand. Boards a little rubbed; corners bumped. In 1671 Colonel Thomas Blood and two accomplices attempted to rob King Charles II. They were caught by Sergeant Talbot Edwards whose daughter had been courted by Blood and though the accomplices escaped Blood was apprehended. King Charles II struck by Blood's audacity held a private conference with him and the result -- much to everyone's surprise and still a cause for speculation -- was not that Blood was punished but that he was pardoned given land in Ireland and an income! Lloyd offers his own explanation here in a musical comedy named for Charles II's horse. Nicely bound and typed on pink paper in black and red ink with his own handwritten scene headings often with a flourish and illustrations usually set designs.

The Brown House hardcover books

192500001491925. Original Wraps. Very Good. Three off prints on Theory of Numbers: Théorie Des Nombres & Sur les nombres de Fermat. Comptes rendus des séances de l'Académie des Sciences t. 180 p. 799 séance du 16 mars 1925 4to off print numbered p.1-2.; Sur Le Nombre N= 1/9 1023 & 1 8vo. 3 1p. ; Sur Les Nombres De Fermat. Fn= 22n 1. 8vo. 5 3p. Plus approximately 65 pages of manuscript notes in French with calculations.

The majority of the manuscript pages appear to deal with quadratic forms in Leonard Dickson's - Studies in the theory of numbers. 1930 which contains numerous original investigations in the theory of quadratic forms in three or four variables. In Dickson's earlier work on the History of the Theory of Numbers 1919-23 he provided little interpretation and made no attempt to contextualize the results being described. It is probably with this background that Kraitchik devoted much of the manuscript sheets to Dickson's work. Other manuscript notes dealing with other equations from Euler "Continuous la table" dated March to December 1939. The last group of manuscript pages in 8vo deal with equations from a publication of Landarsic Backman dated November 1931 and May 1938. There are a few loose sheets with calculations but no identification. These may be sheets used to make rough calculations. Together this manuscript collection and off prints offer a very good example of Kraitchik's thinking in regards the theory of numbers. Although Kraitchik is often thought of in relation to Recreational Mathematics he really spent considerable time with the Theory of Numbers. The present collection of 3 off prints and manuscript sheets most of which are on square lined sheets is thus quite rare and significant for this noted 20th century mathematician. paperback books
