8vo., First Edition, with a frontispiece, 26 plates on 14, 5 illustrations and maps in the text, and endpaper diagrams; green cloth, gilt back, a very good, clean copy in worn and frayed dustwrapper. Well-written investigative account, by an established team, of the dramatic story of THETIS, lost on trials in Liverpool Bay in 1939 with the loss of ninety-nine lives. Very Good Turkish Original albumen print mounted on cardboard. 21x48 cm. Handwritten Turkish note at the lower on empty section. Dated July 19, 1937. Slight fading on board. The photo is in very good condition. It was very significant both politically and militarily showing a Turkish war fleet visiting the British navy in Valletta, the capital of Malta, in 1937. The commander of the fleet was Admiral Sükrü Okan (1880-1957). The Turkish fleet consisted of the cruisers and destroyers named Yavuz Selim, Adatepe, Tinaztepe, Kocatepe, and Zafer, as well as four submarines and the submarine mothership Erkin. This very scarce photograph shows the Turkish fleet with the English fleet in the Valletta port on July 19, 1937.

Not by [Miracle?]. Pizzaro was the Conqueror of Peru about 1520." Gonzalo Pizarro (1513-1548) was a Spanish conquistador who was one of his brother Francisco's main lieutenants during the conquest of the Inca Empire. Gonzalo was cruel and ruthless, but undeniably a very effective soldier. After the conquest, he fought alongside his brothers and their supporters during the civil wars that broke out among the conquistadors. Later, he led the resistance in Peru to the "New Laws" of 1542, taking up arms against an official Spanish Viceroy: this earned him a royal execution in 1548. "Gonzalo's remains were not exposed to the indignities inflicted on Carbajal's, whose quarters were hung in chains on the four great roads leading to Cuzco. Centeno saved Pizarro's body from being stripped, by redeeming his costly raiment from the executioner, and in this sumptuous shroud it was laid in the chapel of the convent of Our Lady of Mercy in Cuzco." (Precott, The Conquest of Peru, p.497).
