189223670New Brunswick New Jersey: David Clark 355 George St. 1892. Cabinet card portrait by 19th century New Jersey photographer David Clark 1825 - 1902. " In 1852 Clark took over Vail's gallery on Peace Street where he remained until relocating probably in 1863 to King Block Commerce Square. There he continued until 1891 at which time he moved to George Street. In 1851 Clark exhibited a few very fine daguerreotypes including a highly praised portrait of a lady at the first World's Fair at the Crystal Palace in London. At the New Jersey State Fair in 1857 he was awarded the prize for the best daguerreotypes in the state. Clark did a large portrait business but he also did other kinds of work including now rare stereographic views of New Brunswick. His career of fifty years spanned important developments in photographic technology so his work is found in a variety of formats and techniques; the most commonly seen today are cartes-de-visite. Clark died in 1902; soon thereafter Isaac S. Van Derveer 1880-1975 was operating at Clark's last location and may have acquired his negatives. A collection of Van Derveer negatives including a few that may be Clark's are now at Special Collections Rutgers University New Brunswick " ref. 2010 Saretzky Nineteenth Century New Jersey Photographers; photo is of a well-dressed & groomed young gentleman sitter not named; approx. 4 1/4" x 6 1/2" overall size; front of mount card with the D. Two of the images are of courtroom interiors with the stamp on the reverse of the firm Behee & Krahmer Architects 17 Washington St. Newark N.J. with a photograph of an architectural rendering identfied on the reverse in pencil as "Short Hills School"School signed Behee & Krahmer Architects within the image. No date or photographer noted circa 1950 as according to our research the firm had wound up its business as a partnership by 1954. Light wear in very good condition. See Sandra L. Old folds small chip to top outer margin two tiny holes affecting just a few letters. A very rare Unionist broadside supporting the re-election of Abraham Lincoln in the critical presidential contest of 1864. The present broadside was authored in early June 1864 by New Jersey Republican Party stalwart Horace N. Congar an editor diplomat and politician who was at that time serving as U.S. consul to Hong Kong. In this rather stirring broadside which Congar writes from his position in Hong Kong he lauds "the thousands of earnest faithful men who are giving freely of their blood and treasure to the suppression of this infamous rebellion" and "the noble daring the undaunted courage and the determined valour of our brave soldiers of Freedom" and urges that "in November New Jersey will stand in the unbroken rank of States giving their verdict for the Party of Union." He also spends considerable space discussing the clear role of "the social moral and political evil" of slavery as the precipitating event of the Civil War. Congar writes that "the evil it has wrought was as natural as the poisoned breath of the Upas tree." Stated clearly Congar writes "I heartily rejoice at the destruction of slavery" and looks forward to the time when "I shall tread my native land with a newer life if within its boundless domain there shall not be heard the clanking chain or the cry of the suffering and the oppressed."<br /> <br /> "Horace Newton Congar 1817-1893 was a radical republican politician during the midnineteenth century and served on both the state and national levels. Mr. Congar had a great love for his party and hope for its success which is reflected in his writing . Horace Newton Congar was born in Newark on July 31 1817. He married Isabell Reeves and had two children; a daughter Ella and a son Horace Junior. Horace Congar taught school for a while and he studied law in his leisure time. He was admitted to the New Jersey State Bar in 1847 and later Cornelius Boice of Plainfield and Lewis Grove of Newark were his law partners. Congar was a friend of the abolitionist cause and he was one of the founders of the antislavery Free Soil Party in New Jersey. The party slogan ‘Free Soil Free Speech Free Labor and Free Men’ basically described the party platform. Congar later became a delegate from New Jersey to the Republican National Convention in 1848 which was held in Buffalo. He supported the nomination of Van Buren for president and Adams for vice-president" - New Jersey Historical Society.<br /> <br /> A rare and unusual Lincoln campaign broadside with just two physical copies in OCLC at AAS and Middlebury College. unknown

New Jersey Black Photography Vernacular photographic archive documenting African American daily life in Newark New Jersey during the 1960s a period of rapid demographic change urban disinvestment and intensifying civil rights activism in one of the nation's most significant Black urban centers. Newark's Black population expanded substantially in the mid-twentieth century through the Great Migration forming dense neighborhood networks alongside persistent segregation housing inequality and strained relations with municipal authorities that would culminate in the 1967 Newark uprising. These photographs provide primary visual evidence of everyday life within this context capturing social interaction leisure commerce and street-level experience. The archive supports research into African American urban history Northern civil rights conditions and the lived realities of Black communities in industrial cities during the late civil rights era.<br /> <br /> Archive of 12 Large silver gelatin photographs. Each measure 8" x 10" on matte photo paper depicting street scenes recreation and community gathering spaces in Newark New Jersey with several images identified as taken along Sussex Avenue. The group includes an outdoor performance by an all-Black band on a public stage scenes of children and adults along residential streets and sidewalks and commercial life including three Black individuals standing outside a storefront marked by a neon "Fish Market" sign indicating neighborhood retail environments. One photograph shows a Black man and a white man standing together on a sidewalk possibly in a social or friendly context offering visual evidence of interracial presence within an urban neighborhood often characterized in historical narratives by segregation and tension. Additional images depict leisure activities such as boating and public park use as well as candid interactions among residents reinforcing the range of everyday experiences beyond protest or crisis imagery<br /> <br /> Taken together these photographs document the texture of daily life in Newark immediately before and during a period of national attention to urban unrest providing a counterpoint to dominant media representations that often centered violence rather than community continuity. The images show Newark's Black residents moving through neighborhood streets businesses and public spaces documenting everyday community life and social interaction in the 1960s urban North.
