Some rubbing to extremities with light wear to spine ends and corners heavier wear to fore-edges of boards. Text in neat hand to rectos and versos of all 500 pages. $650. This privately compiled record allows us to trace the daily work life of a police officer in Newark New Jersey in the years immediately preceding the riots of 1967. At this time Newark was coping with deindustrialization migration of the white middle class to the suburbs and an influx of poor African Americans who were confronted with housing and job discrimination. At the same time the composition of the city's government and police force was predominantly white. Compiled with great care it as both a log book and diary. Here is a list of typical entries: "Responded to Police Headquarters on a call from Lt. O'Leary of the night bureau. From there with Det. Thran to N.Y.C. to pick up prisoner" "Assigned to the New York Police Academy for school" "On duty with Det. Rolleri Lt. Pichel working desk in author's absence" "Assigned in uniform at 5:30am for detail at Newark Airport" "Attending seminar at Rutgers New Brunswick" "Returned to duty in the 1st squad from prosecutor's office" and "Home for working Saturday." He had a few interesting assignments. He was part of a "Special Detail guarding President Kennedy at Columbus Day Parade" and was part of a detail to "guard Sen. Humphrey" when he visited the city. However most of the entries chronicle crimes apprehensions arrests and responses to complaints. Many of these are cases of vandalism petty theft low-level violence and other "quality of life" issues that afflict cities in decline. unknown books

Rare program for Muhammad Ali's legendary rematch against Sonny Liston signed as "Muhammad Ali" shortly before the bout only a year after he took the name - and additionally signed by three other heavyweight champs present at Ali's training camp: Joe Louis Jim Braddock and Jersey Joe Walcott. Ali's swift and crushing defeat of Sonny Liston in the first round of their second title fight in May of 1965 remains not only one of the most iconic moments of Ali's storied career and of boxing history - but also in all of sports. An almost 2-1 underdog Ali's knockout after less than two minutes was famously captured in photographer Neil Leifer's legendary image of Ali towering over the fallen Liston. It remains one of the greatest sports photographs ever taken. <br /> <br /> The fight's status today however is belied in many ways by the humble circumstances of its original context. Postponed due to Ali's hernia surgery it was then rescheduled in the small industrial Maine town of Lewiston - partially because it was the one of the few arenas procurable on short notice but also because major venues were reluctant to be associated with Ali who was increasingly seen as a draft dodger. The fight was sparsely attended: by most accounts only about 2500 of the roughly 4500 seats in the Lewiston high school hockey rink were filled that night. Thus surviving examples of this program are scarce. <br /> <br /> Prior to the bout Ali had holed up at the Schine Inn in Chicopee MA to train talk to the media and receive well-wishers. On May 20 1965 five days before the fight he hosted three fellow champions: the "Brown Bomber" Joe Louis Jim Braddock and Jersey Joe Walcott who would also be the referee for the match where all four of these signatures were gathered the original owner noting as much above the signatures of Louis Braddock and Walcott. <br /> <br /> The program also reflects the confusion controversy and outright resistance surrounding Ali's recent name change. At the start of the fight itself the boxer was booed by the Lewiston crown when the ring announcer introduced him as "Muhammad Ali." Ali is referred to throughout the program as both Cassius Clay and Muhammad Ali and sometimes both at once. Ali had taken the name only the previous years after an address by Elijah Muhammad conferred him with the honorific meaning "most high one worthy of praise". <br /> <br /> This signature therefore represents one of the verifiably earliest "Muhammad Ali" autographs - and on the program and at the training camp for one of his most famous matches. A rare document linking Ali not only to the great Black boxers who immediately preceded him but capturing him at the very cusp of his popular transformation from heavyweight champion to civil rights leader anti-war activist and ultimately legendary humanitarian. A totemic object from the career of one of the 20th century's most famous important and influential figures. 11'' x 8.5''. Original black-and-white pictorial wrappers with red and blue elements saddle-stapled. Illustrated in black and white. 8 leaves. Signed by Ali in blue ink to verso of first leaf over his image. This remarkable photo album illustrates the building and improvement of infrastructure in and around Camden NJ and Gloucester NJ at the beginning of the 20th century for the Public Service Trolley Line Company. Pardee 1882-1932 was a New Jersey contractor and builder who worked on laying trolley tracks for the company. These images show the rebuilt timber fenders along the Pesauken Creek Bridge new retaining wall built for the Smith Property in Bellmawr NJ for the new Trolley Line bridge over the old sluiceway on Martha Pond on the Oswego River timber bridge along the White Horse Pike by Mooretown the rebuilding of the Electric Trolley line extending the Almonessen Branch to Blackwood as well as the Federal Street Bridge over Coopers Creek in Camden NJ. Of particular interest are the excellent series of photos showing the streets and houses through Gloucester NJ as the company ripped out the old wooden cord roads and laid brick for holding the trolley line ties. After World War I Pardee established the E. Brown Pardee Inc. brick stone and masonry supplies in Collingswood NJ expanding to other building materials through the 1920s until his death. This agency has followed its mission to survey the U.S. coastline create nautical charts of the coast and help increase maritime safety since its founding and has often played fascinating roles in significant chapters of U.S. history. It served in all theaters of the Civil War in the service of the Union Army and Navy pioneered acoustic exploration in the wake of the sinking of the Titanic and during WWI it worked to detect enemy submarines. In addition this agency worked to survey and produce detailed maps and renderings of the U.S. coast. These nautical survey maps commonly referred to as "T-sheets" provide fascinating insights into the history of the United States coastline which has and will continue to shift. These maps are the most important data source for understanding the physical and ecological characteristics of the U.S. shoreline. The present map is notable for the inclusion of anchorage areas including general anchorage sections as well as "anchorage explosives" and "man-of-war anchorage" sections.
