The Committee discusses the function of a Constitution which is "the source of all political power the fountain of all government" setting "fundamental" rules of conduct "bounds" to governmental action and guarantees to "publick liberty" by separation of governmental powers. Though power resides in the people the Committee rejects universal suffrage-- which would include "women children negroes mulattoes paupers slaves convicts"-- as "visionary impossible absurd." The Committee considers several other issues involving the appropriate branch of government to make judicial appointments and to exercise the duties of a judicial Chancellor. <br/>OCLC 8685087 2. Features include: Christmas Thoughts for Little Folks; The Car Painter's Boy; Hans Sauermilch's Boy; A Varnish Acrostic; Murphy's ABC System; Varnish Ballads; Scenes in the Gum-Copal Country; Bob's Queen; Polish; Happy New Year 1881. The Murphy Varnish Company was in business from 1865 to 1950. The varnish works was a barely profitable business in 1865 Franklin Murphy's father gave his son a half-share in a weakly profitable varnish company shortly after the younger Murphy came home from the Civil War. Murphy emphasized a quality product and soon found himself running a profitable business. Before Franklin Murphy went into business Americans seeking high-quality varnish had to import it from England. Original 1872 publication bound in modern black leather boards with spine lettered gilt. 264 pp. Presentation copy inscribed in pencil on the first blank "Compliments of G.M. Patterson to ___ ____/ April 22 1873". George W. Patterson was the New Jersey legislator representing the First District of Monmouth County. Binding is fine and fresh; the original publication has some edge repair and chipping to the margins of pp. 3-8. Transcription of the records of the first representative government in what was then the Provinces of East and West New Jersey that first assembled in Perth Amboy in 1703. The Crown formally united for governmental purposes the two provinces under the name "Nova Cesara or New Jersey". The colonial Royal Government would last for 73 years until the colony joined with the other twelve colonies to declare independence in July 1776.
