Our author British civil servant and writer Arthur Hamilton Norway 1859-1938 had an extremely varied literary output which included fiction travelogues and literary analysis. In the present work part of a "Highways and Byways" series produced by the Macmillan Company the author provides a delightful journey through the landscape history and folklore of his native Devon and neighboring Cornwall. The text is accompanied by a charming series of illustrations by Joseph Pennell 1857-1926 and Hugh Thomson 1860-1920; these alternate between cheerful sketches of the towns and scenery and romantic caricatures of the historic locals. The attractive binding is a fine example of the work of the Zaehnsdorf firm long a top-ranked English bindery. Born in Pest Hungary Joseph Zaehnsdorf 1816-86 served his apprenticeship in Stuttgart worked at a number of European locations as a journeyman and then settled in London where he was hired first by Westley and then by Mackenzie before opening his own workshop in 1842. His son and namesake took over the business at age 33 when the senior Joseph died and the firm flourished under the son's leadership becoming a leading West End bindery. Over the years Zaehnsdorf employed a considerable number of distinguished binders including the Frenchman Louis Genth who was chief finisher from 1859-84 and trained a number of others including Roger de Coverly and Sarah Prideaux. A family-run business until 1947 the Zaehnsdorf bindery continued to produce consistently attractive and innovative designs executed with unfailing skill. Here a complex design of softly curving foliage and bright flowers mirrors the serene countryside described in the book's pages. The bookplate is most likely that of American heiress Ophelia Fowler Duhme 1854-1921 who had a handful of attractively illustrated bookplates made for her throughout her collecting life. 1716277AG1716. Nuremberg c.1716. Handcoloured Original Engraving copper engraving. 495 cm wide x 59 cm high. Excellent condition of this beautiful original 18th century map. Johann Baptist Homann 20 March 1664 1 July 1724 was a German geographer and cartographer who made maps of the Americas. Homann was born in Oberkammlach near Kammlach in the Electorate of Bavaria. Although educated at a Jesuit school and preparing an ecclesiastical career he eventually converted to Protestantism and from 1687 worked as a civil law notary in Nuremberg. He soon turned to engraving and cartography; in 1702 he founded his own publishing house. Homann acquired renown as a leading German cartographer and in 1715 was appointed Imperial Geographer by Emperor Charles VI. Giving such privileges to individuals was an added right that the Holy Roman Emperor enjoyed. In the same year he was also named a member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences in Berlin. Of particular significance to cartography were the imperial printing privileges Latin: privilegia impressoria. These protected for a time the authors in all scientific fields such as printers copper engravers map makers and publishers. They were also very important as recommendation for potential customers. In 1716 Homann published his masterpiece Grosser Atlas ueber die ganze Welt Grand Atlas of all the World. Numerous maps were drawn up in cooperation with the engraver Christoph Weigel the Elder who also published Siebmachers Wappenbuch. Homann died in Nuremberg. He was succeeded by the Homann heirs company in business until 1848 known as "Homann Erben" "Homanniani Heredes" "Heritiers de Homann" abroad. Wikipedia unknown

1957007773Langwarrin Victoria Australia 1957. Very Good. A substantive letter from the popular English and Australian novelist Nevil Shute Norway 1899-1960 who dropped his true surname as his nom de plume was an aeronautics engineer before he began publishing novels. The letter demonstrates the meticulous research Shute applied to his writing and his striving to nail down the accuracy of details that would probably not even be noticed by most readers. Shute had just published the novel he was and remains best known for -- "On the Beach" -- and so he was at the height of his fame. The contemplated novel referred to in the letter became Shute's second to last published novel in his lifetime -- "The Rainbow and the Rose". The question posed in the letter relates to nitty gritty of a fighter plane motor for a plane used in the First World War. The letter is framed and matted with two windows to show each of the typed pages. The stationary is standard business stationary size. The frame is 36 by 52 cm oblong. The frame is a plain black. The robin egg blue matting provides an attractive contrast to the unadorned stationary. Each of the mounted sheets has a small corner chip probably a casualty of a staple removal. Curiously the two sheets are of different colors. unknown
