Very Good English Original wrappers. Roy. 8vo. ('4 x 17 cm). In English. pp. 97-127, 9 b/w plates. This offprint from the Greek journal published in a long run from 1928 to 1961 in 24 volumes, examines the 14th-century coastline of the Byzantine Empire of Trebizond with toponyms and topography on two portolan maps of the period. "Bryer was a British historian of the Byzantine Empire and founder of the Centre for Byzantine, Ottoman, and Modern Greek Studies at the University of Birmingham. Part of his childhood was spent in Jerusalem and he was acquainted with Sir Steven Runciman, historian, and Byzantine Scholar. He initially remained at Balliol for his doctorate on the Empire of Trebizond, which he completed in 1967, but in 1964 he moved to the University of Birmingham where he created a program in Byzantine studies. In 1975 he founded the journal Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies. From 1976, he was the founding Director of the Centre for Byzantine Studies, and in 1980 he was appointed Professor of Byzantine Studies, a post which he held until 1999." (Wikipedia). Not in OCLC.
Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) In modern full leather bdg. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). In Ottoman Turkish. [vii], 141, [1] p., 3 b/w maps and 5 b/w ills. in 5 plates. Frederick William Hasluck was an English antiquarian, historian, and archaeologist. In 1913 being Assistant Director (1911-15) and Librarian (1906-15) of the British School in Athens Hasluck married Margaret Hardie. As a wedding present, Hardie chose a visit to Konya (ancient Iconium) from the options offered her by her husband, and the couple spent the spring of 1913 there together. Frederick had long been interested in the interplay of Christianity and Islam within the Turkish Empire, and he was gradually to make this a central part of his work. The Haslucks were based in Athens and, over the next four years, had the opportunity to travel widely together in the southwest Balkans. Ragip Hulûsi Özdem, (1893-1943), was a Turkish linguist and politician, who was an early member of the Kemalist modernization movement. He was a member of the commission involved in introducing the modern Turkish alphabet. OCLC: 122646884.; Özege 1796.; TBTK 12949. First Edition.

18785190s.l.: s.n. 1878. Small broadside 185 x 250mm woodcut vignette below title text in two columns. Poor-quality paper chipped and somewhat toned a few tears touching title larger area of loss to one margin clear of text. A scarce and fragile broadside of patriotic doggerel to inspire Englishmen to ‘arrise sic with heart and hand And sweep the cowardly Russian bear from off the Turkish land.’ With reference to Crimean war battles at ‘Inkerman Sebastopool and Balaclava too’ it likely dates from the Russo-Turkish war of 1877-78 when British warships were sent through the Dardanelles to aid the city of Constantinople although the signing of the Treaty of San Stefano on March 3rd 1878 ended the conflict and obviated the cause for this ‘probable war’. Poorly-printed with numerous compositing errors on thin paper this is an unlikely survivor and we have not been able to trace any copies in any collections. Although last line present ends with a comma it seems a fitting finish so this is likely another typo rather than an indication of more text on another sheet. [s.n.] unknown
