This book is the outcome of an extensive research work by Prof. Dr. Recep Çi¿dem from Harran University in Turkey. It is published within IRCICA¿s Series of Sharia Court Registers. It analyzes the records of the Ottoman Sharia law courts preserved at St. St. Cyril and Methodius National Library in Bulgaria. In the first chapter of the book the author gives information on the cases dealt with by these courts, the procedures for the appointment of the qadis (judges) and naibs (deputy judges), the terminology of judicial records, documents issued by the courts, and a number of other subjects of interest for the law historian. The second chapter is devoted to Muslim minority courts with coverage of such themes as the structure of the Sharia courts; the First Instance Court, the Court of Appeals, the High Sharia Court, relations between the Sharia courts and secular courts, administrative authorities, officials, lawyers, the extent of the power of these courts, among others. The third chapter, which is the main part of the study, examines individual registers. A total of 191 registers preserved in the library were scrutinized and documents related to each case were scanned. The Foreword of Prof. Çi¿dem explains in detail the salient features of each chapter and specifies that the third chapter focuses mainly on the Sharia courts of the independence period in Bulgaria, specifically between 1878-1945. The extensive bibliography and the index of personal names will be useful for researchers concerned.

Fine French Paperback. Pbo. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). In French. 66 p. La Bessarabie: Donnees geographiques, ethniques, historiques et politiques. A study on Bessarabia is a historical region in Eastern Europe, bounded by the Dniester river on the east and the Prut river on the west. Today Bessarabia is mostly occupied by modern-day Moldova, with the Ukrainian Budjak region covering the southern coastal region and part of the Ukrainian Chernivtsi Oblast covering a small area in the north. In the aftermath of the Russo-Turkish War (1806-1812), and the ensuing Peace of Bucharest, the eastern parts of the Principality of Moldavia, an Ottoman vassal, along with some areas formerly under direct Ottoman rule, were ceded to Imperial Russia. The acquisition was among the Empire's last territorial acquisitions in Europe. The newly acquired territories were organised as the Governorate of Bessarabia, adopting a name previously used for the southern plains, between the Dniester and the Danube rivers. Following the Crimean War, in 1856, the southern areas of Bessarabia were returned to Moldavian rule; Russian rule was restored over the whole of the region in 1878, when Romania, the result of Moldavia's union with Wallachia, was pressured into exchanging those territories for the Dobruja. This illustrated, revisionary account of the long reign of the Byzantine emperor Basil II (976-1025) establishes that the 'Bulgar-slayer' legend was in fact created long after Basil's death, and shows how the emperor's supposedly fearsome reputation was seized upon by scholars and politicians in the modern period. ; 182 pages
