L'histoire culturelle des Balkans et en particulier de la Bulgarie a été profondément marquée par la domination ottomane. Au XIXe siècle pourtant, avec l'apparition de l'idéal national, un vaste mouvement de rejet s'opéra, au profit de la culture occidentale. Au sein d'un même processus, européanisation et "désottomanisation" sont étroitement mêlées. C'est ce second aspect que "Le Sort de l'Héritage Ottoman en Bulgarie" se propose d'étudier durant la période clé de 1878-1900. En effet l'émancipation politique du pays provoqua l'accélération d'un phénomène amorcé dès le milieu du siècle et qui s'exprime le pus nettement dans les milieux urbains.

The origin of the Turkish press in Bulgaria goes back to the Ottoman period. In 1865 a provincial printinghouse was founded by Midhat Pasaha at Roustchouk (Russe), the capital of the Danube province of the Ottoman Empire, now the north part of Bulgaria. The same year the first Turkish newspaper named Tuna (Danube) was published in the same place. This paper was closed on the day of Russian occupation, 13th of June 1877. In 1867 a magazine in Turkish called Mecra-i Efkâr (Stream of Opinions), and then in 1875 a bilingual newspaper named Günes / Soleil were published in Russe. Also other publications in Turkish and Bulgarian were printed in the Danube province printinghouse.
