ISBN 960-244-091-0.

This study the product of systematic archival research in archives and libraries of Italian and Greek cities analyzes the institution of the Monte di Pietà in Corfu during the period 1630-1864. It examines both the early beginnings of the credit institution’s functioning in Western Europe and the social conditions that imposed it. The phenomenon of poverty and its handling by medieval societies mobilized a specific Roman Catholic monastic order not towards the habitual practice of alms giving but to establishing a credit institution. The book analyzes the reasons and conditions of the creation of the Monte di Pietà in Corfu the way in which it functioned and its supervision and control. The institution’s presence in the Corfiot environment contributed to a control of economic life to an improvement of the lower social classes’ living standards and therefore to their participation in the island’s economic life. The access to various credit services the repression of usury and the control of the money in circulation constituted important elements in the evolution of economic life on Corfu.
Politistiko Hidryma Homilou Peiraios paperback
201222171Cambridge University Press. 2012. Hardcover. Very Good in Very Good dust jacket. 1 corner lightly bumped else book is fine. DJ has tiny chip near heel of spine.; Athenians in the classical period 508-322 BC were drawn to an image of themselves as a compassionate and generous people who rushed to the aid of others in distress both at home and abroad. What relation does this image bear to actual Athenian behavior This book argues that Athenians felt little pressure as individuals to help fellow citizens whom they did not know. Democratic ideology called on citizens to refrain from harming one another rather than to engage in mutual support and emphasized the importance of the helping relationship between citizen and city rather than among individual citizens. If the obligation of Athenians to help fellow citizens was fairly tenuous all the more so was their responsibility to intervene to assist the peoples of other states; a distinct pragmatism prevailed in the city's decisions concerning intervention abroad.; 215 pages . 1107029775 . This volume comprising mostly Cretan and Cypriot studies is offered by an array of scholars who have been taught or examined by Cadogan or who have collaborated with him in the field or excavation workrooms over the last fifty years. More than thirty short papers reflect Cadogan’s wide range of interests from interpreting excavation data – architecture stratigraphy pottery and small finds – to matters of prehistoric chronology ethnography and gender technology environment and osteology mythology and iconography religion and death. The collection is a fascinating testament to the continuing achievements of one of the finest archaeologists of the region.

=========================================================

IMPORTANT: The price does NOT include the shipping cost which depends on actual weight and destination. 201433780New York: A.A.Knopf 2014 Book. As New. Hardcover. 1st US Edition. Built in the fifth century b.c. the Parthenon has been venerated for more than two millennia as the West's ultimate paragon of beauty and proportion. Since the Enlightenment it has also come to represent our political ideals the lavish temple to the goddess Athena serving as the model for our most hallowed civic architecture. But how much do the values of those who built the Parthenon truly correspond with our own And apart from the significance with which we have invested it what exactly did this marvel of human hands mean to those who made it In this revolutionary book Joan Breton Connelly challenges our most basic assumptions about the Parthenon and the ancient Athenians. Beginning with the natural environment and its rich mythic associations she re-creates the development of the Acropolis -the Sacred Rock at the heart of the city-state- from its prehistoric origins to its Periklean glory days as a constellation of temples among which the Parthenon stood supreme. In particular she probes the Parthenon's legendary frieze: the 525-foot-long relief sculpture that originally encircled the upper reaches before it was partially destroyed by Venetian cannon fire in the seventeenth century. . The frieze's vast enigmatic procession -a dazzling pageant of cavalrymen and elders musicians and maidens - has for more than two hundred years been thought to represent a scene of annual civic celebration in the birthplace of democracy. But thanks to a once-lost play by Euripides the discovery of which in the wrappings of a Hellenistic Egyptian mummy is only one of this book's intriguing adventures Connelly has uncovered a long-buried meaning a story of human sacrifice set during the city's mythic founding. In a society startlingly preoccupied with cult ritual this story was at the core of what it meant to be Athenian. Connelly reveals a world that beggars our popular notions of Athens as a city of staid philosophers rationalists and rhetoricians a world in which our modern secular conception of democracy would have been simply incomprehensible. The Parthenon's full significance has been obscured until now owing in no small part Connelly argues to the frieze's dismemberment. And so her investigation concludes with a call to reunite the pieces in order that what is perhaps the greatest single work of art surviving from antiquity may be viewed more nearly as its makers intended. Marshalling a breathtaking range of textual and visual evidence full of fresh insights woven into a thrilling narrative that brings the distant past to life The Parthenon Enigma is sure to become a landmark in our understanding of the civilization from which we claim cultural descent. 512p. illus some col bibliographyindex Remainder mark else new . 2004040692New York: Pella Publishing Company 2004 Book. New. Soft cover. First Edition. "'Greeces twentieth-century history not unlike that of a large portion of the rest of Europe has been marked by frequent wars economic underdevelopment deep political fissures political clientelism and frequent as well as competing foreign intervention in the country's domestic affairs. In political science terms the countrys democratic system was less than consolidated in the sense that it was marked by frequent military intervention in politics. This book reconstructs Greeces melancholy political landscape during the dark years of the colonels dictatorship. The author conducted scores of interviews with prominent political figures e.g. Constantine Karamanlis Andreas Papandreou Panayiotis Kanellopoulos Constantine Mitsotakis Mikis Theodorakis Georgios Mavros Archbishop Makarios and former King Constantine. He also met with some functionaries representing the Greek junta and with a number of American diplomats. These interviews recorded over thirty years ago mirror the attitudes and mentalities of political protagonists of that time and could be treated as primary source material for historians who still need to produce a detached and dispassionate record of those trying times." 344p. index. Mnemosyne Bibliotheca Classica Batava : Supplementum; 1 x 9.7 x 6.3 Inches; 301 pages; This is a book about the law and life of Rome—in which contributors respond to John Crook's injunction to 'think like lawyers' by ranging as far as ancient Greece ancient Persia and modern Denmark to expound their themes and draw comparisons. An opening section focuses on Civil Law more or less as conventionally conceived with chapters on the peculium on municipal law at Irni in Roman Spain on advisers of Roman provincial governors and on violent crime. Roman perceptions of the physical and human worlds are the focus of a second section and comparisons between Greek Roman and modern ways of thinking about law and government come into the third section. In the final section contributors argue the history of law and life from refractions of real and imagined Rome. . 9004124748 . Brill Academic Publishers hardcover
