S6167IME 2009. Brand new. Photographic album with three-dimensional photorealistic digital reconstructions of the buildings of the Ancient Agora in the Classical Period. It brings to life with excellent accuracy one of the most important sites of ancient hellenic culture and of the classical world. With respect to historical sources and with complete use of three-dimensional graphics the publication reconstructs both the areas and the objects and values that are directly related to the way of life and the values of that period: the judicial system celebratory rituals voting etc. In this way it demonstrates the multidimensional character of the Agora as a place where ideas were born where the intellect was cultivated and where artists created. Therefore it provides readers with the opportunity to experience virtually the most important location of ancient Athens perhaps in its most significant moment in history the Classical Period. // Also available in greek. 143725EIE 2008-2010. Brand new. In medieval greek. Two volumes. Cloth 33x22 cm 185220 pp. // An extremely important source of a legal congregation of the Orthodox Church established in 1564 under the title "NOMIMON of the Great Church." It remained in official use until the end of the 16th century. There is evidence that the crisis of the 1580s during which the patriarchal church of Pammacaristos was converted to a mosque did not affect this collection of ecclesiastical laws which was continued to be used after the transfer of the Patriarchate March 1592. Consequently this valuable written monument "was lost" from the Secretariat of the Patriarchate. Since then its traces have been lost and "Nomimon" was forgotten. Recently however two parts of this valuable legal synagogue were identified so valuable for the history of the institution and the history of the law: one in Samos island and the other in Paris. The author of the book studied systematically the contents identified the gaps and restored to their original position some pieces of the manuscripts that were moved; this book contains a facsimile reprint of the surviving parts of the "Nomimon". 186775634N.p.: N.p. ca. 1867. The sheet possibly taken from and album but there are no signs of that measures 9 x 11 1/4 inches and it bears three small photographs: George King of the Greeks; Olga Queen of the Greeks and Athens Surrounding these photographs someone has penned in a very neat hand a fair copy of John Milton's poem Athens. A very attractive presentation. The byzantine ways of Europe's royalty never ceases to amaze. "Born a Danish Prince in Copenhagen’s royal Yellow Palace King George I of the Hellenes 1845-1913 was seventeen when he was elected to establish a new dynasty of kings by the Greek National Assembly who had deposed Bavarian-born King Otto and the unpopular Queen Amalia in 1862. King George had the distinction of taking the Greek throne before his father who was to become King Christian IX of Denmark. His nomination was supported by the Great Powers of Russia France and Great Britain. The Greek government held a plebiscite and the British Prince Alfred Duke of Edinburgh was awarded 95% of the vote but his mother Queen Victoria was adamant that the Prince would not leave England so Prince George took the prize. When King George I sailed into Athens in 1863 he said ‘my strength is in the love of my people’. In his accession speech the King declared ‘in these modern days Princes must strive to be superior in intellect knowledge and goodness to those around them’. A born democrat King George supported the constitutional monarchy and swiftly mastered Greek as well as national sports such as wrestling and running. He established the modern Olympic Games in Athens and opened the summer games in 1896. His endeavors to endear himself to his people earned him the moniker ‘Father of the Nation’ and King George reigned for almost fifty-years" Henry Poole. He was killed by an anarchist in 1913 right after he chose to abdicate the throne. There is a large photograph of a British tombstone on the verso. N.p. unknown

123193Greece c. 1854-57. . Oblong 8vo 15.2 x 24 cm; 20 pen and wash grey and bistre drawings heightened with white c. 115 x 150 mm with descriptive ms captions in Greek leaves slightly toned occasional spotting to margins but generally clean and fresh; contemporary brown half sheep over black pebble-grained boards cover title 'Antiquites Grecques' in gilt gilt dulled a little worn and rubbed with some loss to spine joints cracked but holding still a lovely example.
A very unusual sketchbook most likely compiled by a French draughstman as an architectural study of the Greek monuments they saw on their travels. The ruins are shown in their monumentality and decay in splendid isolation typical for the period before the sites were excavated.

Judging from the condition of the monuments we can date the drawings to between 1854 and 1857. The sketchbook itself was likely purchased in Greece with the drawings applied directly to the pages i.e. not bound later and then on the artist's return to France the binding was stamped with the title 'ANTIQUITÉS GRECQUES'.

Sketchbooks of Greek sites are much rarer than comparable ones of Italy partly to do with the Grand Tour or tourist trails stretching as a matter of course to Italy but much rarer to Greece owing to the dangers and challenges of Mediterranean travel and an apprehension amongst travellers in the decades following the Ottoman occupation.
Greece, c. 1854-57. hardcover
