Come nei Ritratti immaginari e in Mario Epicureo, anche nei saggi che andarono poi a tornare la raccolta editorialmente denominata Studi greci, egli impegna la sua grande competenza di studioso e di filologo, nonché il suo alto magistero stilistico, in una rivisitazione e revisione del mondo classico in funzione del moderno e delle sue forme. La sua scrittura evocativa, introspettiva, lavora a estrarre narrazione dalla figura mitica, così come dal gruppo scultoreo, facendo di quello che egli chiama studio una forma anticipatrice del romanzo moderno. Walter Pater (Londra 1839-Oxford 1894) saggista e narratore inglese. I frequenti contatti con i preraffaelliti gli diedero modo di approfondire il suo interesse per l'arte e la letteratura. Tra le sue opere oltre ai già citati Mario l'Epicureo (1885) e Ritratti immaginari (1887), ricordiamo: Apprezzamenti (1889), Platone e il platonismo (1893), Il fanciullo nella casa (1894). La Conclusione dei suoi Studi sul Rinascimento (1873) divenne una sorta di manifesto del nuovo edonismo anti-vittoriano, e la sua prosa elegante influenzò un intera generazione di intellettuali. In questi saggi scritti in un arco di tempo di vent'anni, tra il 1875 e il 1894, e apparsi postumi con la denominazione di "Studi greci", Walter Pater (1839-1894) impegna la sua competenza di studioso e di filologo in una rivisitazione del mondo classico in funzione del moderno e delle sue forme.
