"From 1943 to 1949 tens of thousands of Greek soldiers and guerrillas fought and slaughtered each other - as well as thousands of innocents - in a civil war of unrelenting and shocking savagery. In the wake of the Allied liberation of Greece from German occupation the fighting transformed into a full-scale civil war pitting the Communist insurgents against U.S.- and British-backed government forces. As a proxy war between the postwar superpowers the Greek Civil War became the first hot zone of the Cold War. 300p. bibliography.index. Basic Books hardcover
2014038692Athens: Dioptra 2014 Book. Illus. by Trans. Michalis Delengos. New Book from Greece. French Wraps. Reissue. Until recently popular biographers and most scholars viewed Alexander the Great as a genius with a plan a romantic figure pursuing his vision of a united world. His dream was at times characterized as a benevolent interest in the brotherhood of man sometimes as a brute interest in the exercise of power. Green a Cambridge-trained classicist who is also a novelist portrays Alexander as both a complex personality and a single-minded general a man capable of such diverse expediencies as patricide or the massacre of civilians. Green describes his Alexander as "not only the most brilliant and ambitious field commander in history but also supremely indifferent to all those administrative excellences and idealistic yearnings foisted upon him by later generations especially those who found the conqueror tout court a little hard upon their liberal sensibilities."This biography begins not with one of the universally known incidents of Alexander's life but with an account of his father Philip of Macedonia whose many-territoried empire was the first on the continent of Europe to have an effectively centralized government and military. What Philip and Macedonia had to offer Alexander made his own but Philip and Macedonia also made Alexander form an important context for understanding Alexander himself. Yet his origins and training do not fully explain the man. After he was named hegemon of the Hellenic League many philosophers came to congratulate Alexander but one was conspicuous by his absence: Diogenes the Cynic an ascetic who lived in a clay tub.Piqued and curious Alexander himself visited the philosopher who when asked if there was anything Alexander could do for him made the famous reply "Don't stand between me and the sun." Alexander's courtiers jeered but Alexander silenced them: "If I were not Alexander I would be Diogenes." This remark was as unexpected in Alexander as it would be in a modern leader. For the general reader the book redolent with gritty details and fully aware of Alexander's darker side offers a gripping tale of Alexander's career. Full backnotes fourteen maps and chronological and genealogical tables serve readers with more specialized interests. Dioptra paperback

200139275University of Michigan Press. 2001. Hardcover. Fine in Very Good dust jacket. Very light edgewear to DJ with 1 tiny chip.; 320 pages; Situated on the southwest coast of modern Turkey Miletos stood for centuries as one of the paramount cities in the Hellenic world a gateway between the East and West. It became especially famous as the most prolific mother city in Greek history sending out at least forty-five known primary and secondary settlements into the Sea of Marmara and the Black Sea while at home developing into an intellectual and artistic center and one of the birthplaces of Western science and philosophy. A history of Miletos is long overdue. Despite the significance of this city in antiquity and the important results of ongoing excavations there the last full-scale discussion of Miletos was written in 1915. In Miletos the Ornament of Ionia Vanessa B. Gorman provides the first and only modern integrated history of the city collecting and scrutinizing sources about Miletos for the period stretching from the first signs of habitation until 400 B. C. E. This book reviews the archaeological evidence for the physical city demonstrates the likelihood of both Minoan and Mycenaean settlements there and substantiates the fact of the Persian destruction and refoundation of Miletos along orthogonal lines. With insight and diligence Gorman surveys the cults known to have existed during this period; traces the political progress of the city through monarchy oligarchy tyranny and democracy; and sketches the terms of its subjugation under the Persians and later the Athenians. Providing a detailed and up-to-date account of the development of one of the major urban centers of Asia Minor Gorman's book will engage classicists historians and Near Eastern specialists. . 047211199X . DJ has very light shelfwear.; Syssitia: Studien Zur Geschichte Und Kultur Spartas Und Zur Sparta-Rezeption. . 3941820060 . Wellem Verlag hardcover

Very minor shelfwear else Fine.; Studies in the Ancient and Medieval Art of Warfare V; 189 pages; Sekunda argues that in the 160s BC the Ptolemaic and Seleucid infantry were reorganized to make them more successful and more competitive against the might of the Romans. This Romanization of the military took the form of new tactics and changes in the organization and in the equipment given to the soldier with evidence coming from archaeological literary epigraphic and iconographic sources. Sekunda looks at the pre-Romanized organization of the infantry providing the necessary background history to the later reforms. . 8385874046 . Oficyna Naukowa MS hardcover
