2001S9068Nicosia: Politistiko Hidryma Trapezes Kyprou 2001. Brand new. Bilingual Greek / English illustrated edition. Folder 28 x 27 / 320 pp.; a CD with music and songs from various regions of Asia Minor is included in the case. Almost eighty years have passed since the Asia Minor Disaster 1922 which was such a tragically determining factor in the history of modern Hellenism. The Bank of Cyprus Cultural Foundation and Ephesus Publishing have decided to publish the present richly illustrated volume as the least we could do as an act of homage to the world of Asia Minor to those who lost their lives and to those who were uprooted from the land of their fathers. Smyrna a cosmopolitan city but with a large and prosperous Greek community is presented symbolically as representing all the Greeks of Asia Minor whose metropolis it was. The unique pictorial material used in this publication consists mainly of postcards but also photographs from important historical archives. The cards have been selected from a rich collection and indeed this may be the first time they have all been published together. Thus the reader can find a virtually complete picture of the Ionian capital since most of the individual pieces in the mosaic are presented in these pages. In addition a picture is provided of present-day Smyrna with photographs taken especially for this publication. The fact that this is essentially an art book does not mean that less attention has been paid to the texts. On the contrary the collaboration with the Centre for Asia Minor Studies has ensured the desired level of quality and endowed the work with an academic identity. 200536482Washington: American Hellenic Institute Foundation 2005 Book. New Book from Publisher. Hardcover. 1st US Ed. A powerful autobiography set in the turbulent decade of 1940s Greece. Through the eyes of an impressionable and intelligent young man who came of age in a time of world war foreign occupation resistance and civil war we witness the tragedy and trauma suffered by Greece. While uniquely personal this is also the story of young Greeks cast unwillingly into the ambivalences and horrors of WWII.The authors descriptions are vivid and convincing. Against a rigorously researched backdrop of the key historical events we see youthful idealism being forcibly reconciled to the realities of hunger brutality dissension and death. With a keen eye for detail and reflecting on the mundane as well as the profound we watch as Greece patriotically fends off foreign invasion and survives years of harsh occupation but gullibly and disastrously succumbs to the blandishments of utopians. Hard cover 22x30 cm 498 pp. ill.; net weight 2640 gr.

ISBN: 978-618-5209-216.

This monograph on the castle of Modon leads us on a journey from Homer to the 20th century and concentrates particularly on the Venetian presence. It aims to remain accessible to the general reader and explores certain themes that until now have been shrouded in darkness: the correct name of Modon its ancient walls and coins the written and pictorial evidence for the castle the structure of its Venetian administration the deciphering and identification of the 27 coats of arms of Modon the history of the lion of Venice the study of the 18 lions embedded in the walls the discovery of the real attribution of the wrongly named Morosini column the restoration of the name of the so-called Villehardouin tower the examination and reading of the mason’s mark of the central gate the finding of the correct original name of the eight-sided tower of the mole which is still called by its Turkish name Bourtzi and the identification of the Mediaeval form of the old harbour.

When the restoration of the castle is secured excavations will be able to bring to light those treasures still hidden in once-rich. Modon. Some of these treasures will demonstrate a privileged development others will bring out a particular sensitivity. Some are buried under the ground some others have fallen into the sea but all of them are locked up in a talkative silence. Time and Man have shifted and accumulated the soil burying valuable evidence of the past. Nature’s fury threw down buildings and sent to the depths the ships that ignored her caprices. Everything that escaped the earthquakes conquerors and the antiquities looters remains under earth and stones. The most valuable treasures are those that do not gleam as long as there are those that value the knowledge they reveal. The debt to cultural heritage is incalculable; the damage it has suffered great; concern for its preservation however is small for the time being. It is good for people to dream; but it is safer to know what they must do when they wake up.

<224710>

.

.

==============================================================

IMPORTANT: The price does NOT include the shipping cost which depends on actual weight and destination. Fotografie a colori di Effie Paleologou. Cm 33x27. pp. 112. Firma autografa dell'Artista alla prima pagina bianca Signed by the Artist on first blank page. Perfetto Mint. Prima edizione First Edition. Mack, hardcover
