Ogni generazione deve assumersi la responsabilità di questa reinvenzione, cioè di attingere dal passato qualcosa che permetta di decifrare il presente, che consenta di cogliere, sotto la superficie del flusso inarrestabile degli eventi e delle informazioni, ciò che ci riguarda direttamente, ci chiama in causa. Per farlo è necessario sottrarsi al brusio assordante della modernità e prestare ascolto a quanto hanno ancora da dirci gli antichi, i Greci in particolare. Perché la tragedia greca, a duemilacinquecento anni di distanza, continua a parlarci con forza, ponendoci di fronte questioni ineludibili: dà voce al dolore e alla sofferenza, racconta i conflitti che lacerano le comunità e squassano i rapporti familiari, ha molto da dirci riguardo alle nostre origini, mette a nudo la precarietà della nostra esistenza. E soprattutto descrive la zona grigia in cui si dispiega l'agire degli uomini, costretti a vivere in un mondo dominato dall'ambiguità e dall'incertezza, dove la ragione spesso si rivela una guida insufficiente a dissolvere l'opacità che li avvolge e le parole non sono altro che un vuoto gioco di prestigio che occulta la verità. Una «terra di mezzo» sospesa tra libertà e necessità, fra autonomia e dipendenza, dove il passato sembra condizionare ogni decisione e il futuro assume le sembianze del fato, cioè di una realtà che pare al di fuori della nostra portata ma che tuttavia ha bisogno di noi per potersi realizzare. La tragedia, quindi, ci rivolge in maniera pressante una domanda cruciale: che cosa dobbiamo fare? Di fronte ai drammi del nostro presente - le guerre, le ingiustizie, la violenza, la povertà - come dobbiamo agire? Qual è il nostro grado di coinvolgimento? Possiamo davvero considerarci non responsabili? Fino a dove può spingersi la nostra inazione o la nostra indifferenza? "A lezione dagli antichi" ci invita a trovare una risposta a questi interrogativi, una risposta che è essenzialmente «politica», perché attiene al nostro essere cittadini, parte attiva di una comunità che di fronte ai drammi degli altri non distoglie lo sguardo ma li riconosce come propri. Non è un caso, infatti, se la tragedia è nata nell'Atene democratica del V secolo a.C., se in essa «la città si fa teatro» e si mette in scena. Se vogliamo capire chi siamo, se vogliamo scoprire quale ruolo possiamo svolgere nel mondo, allora dobbiamo tornare al palcoscenico della vita che i tragici greci hanno allestito per noi.
