At the end of the 1840's decade the tiny modern Greek Kingdom organizes its first official secret mission to the coterminous Ottoman provinces which were at most inhabited by Greek people; however they also were terra incognita for the Greek services. 2001S9068Nicosia: Politistiko Hidryma Trapezes Kyprou 2001. Brand new. Bilingual Greek / English illustrated edition. Folder 28 x 27 / 320 pp.; a CD with music and songs from various regions of Asia Minor is included in the case. Almost eighty years have passed since the Asia Minor Disaster 1922 which was such a tragically determining factor in the history of modern Hellenism. The Bank of Cyprus Cultural Foundation and Ephesus Publishing have decided to publish the present richly illustrated volume as the least we could do as an act of homage to the world of Asia Minor to those who lost their lives and to those who were uprooted from the land of their fathers. Smyrna a cosmopolitan city but with a large and prosperous Greek community is presented symbolically as representing all the Greeks of Asia Minor whose metropolis it was. The unique pictorial material used in this publication consists mainly of postcards but also photographs from important historical archives. The cards have been selected from a rich collection and indeed this may be the first time they have all been published together. Thus the reader can find a virtually complete picture of the Ionian capital since most of the individual pieces in the mosaic are presented in these pages. In addition a picture is provided of present-day Smyrna with photographs taken especially for this publication. The fact that this is essentially an art book does not mean that less attention has been paid to the texts. On the contrary the collaboration with the Centre for Asia Minor Studies has ensured the desired level of quality and endowed the work with an academic identity. 20028896Cambridge University Press. 2002. Softcover. Very Good. 264 pages; The warring Greek city-states of the classical period often found it advantageous to use slaves in their armed forces and to encourage rebellion or desertion among the slaves of their enemies. But since military service was highly esteemed while the state of slavery was despised classical Greek historians such as Herodotus Thucydides and Xenophon tended not to discuss slave participation in war. This book examines the actual role of slaves in war the neglect of it by historians and the reasons for this reticence. . 0521893909 . Cambridge University Press paperback
