Read the contents at the attached image.</p><p><i>The existence of the Albanian community in Epirus known as the Chams during the first half of the 20th century remains to this day one of the least known subjects of recent Greek history. It is an issue which for quite a few decades was ignored voluntarily or involuntarily by Greek historiography. The filling in of this gap in historiography and the need for an approach as objective and sober as possible to this theme is what the present work aspires to do. The conditions by which the Albanian Chams were incorporated into the Greek state in 1923 their living conditions the problems that emerged during the inter-war period and of course the dramatic escalation of the issue which took place simultaneous to the Greco-Italian War and the Nazi occupation of Greece occupy the central part of the work. The book comprises also a final chapter that refers to contemporary developments and must be seen as serving a purely informative role. That which is desired here is that the reader be enabled to merely complete the picture which he had formed on a theme which although has theoretically expired with the termination of the war in fact has come once again to the forefront emerging from the lethargy of more than half a century due of course to the wider rearrangements and reversals which had taken place in the meantime in the Balkan peninsula.</i></p> IMXA paperback

Lisa Kallet brilliantly reshapes our literary and historical understanding of Thucydides' account of the disastrous Sicilian expedition of 415Ð413 b.c. a pivotal event in the Peloponnesian War. She shows that the second half of Thucydides' History contains a damning critique of Athens and its leaders for becoming corrupted by money and for failing to appropriately use their financial strength on military power. Focusing especially on the narrative techniques Thucydides used to build his argument Kallet gives a close examination of the subjects of wealth and power in this account of naval war and its aftermath and locates Thucydides' writings on these themes within a broad intellectual context. <P>Among other topics Kallet discusses Thucydides' use of metaphor his numerous intertextual references to Herodotus and Homer and thematic links he makes among the topics of money emotion and sight. Overall she shows that the subject of money constitutes a continuous thematic thread in books six through eight of the History. In addition this book takes a fresh look at familiar epigraphic evidence. A history of Miletos is long overdue. Despite the significance of this city in antiquity and the important results of ongoing excavations there the last full-scale discussion of Miletos was written in 1915. In Miletos the Ornament of Ionia Vanessa B. Gorman provides the first and only modern integrated history of the city collecting and scrutinizing sources about Miletos for the period stretching from the first signs of habitation until 400 B. C. E. This book reviews the archaeological evidence for the physical city demonstrates the likelihood of both Minoan and Mycenaean settlements there and substantiates the fact of the Persian destruction and refoundation of Miletos along orthogonal lines. With insight and diligence Gorman surveys the cults known to have existed during this period; traces the political progress of the city through monarchy oligarchy tyranny and democracy; and sketches the terms of its subjugation under the Persians and later the Athenians.
