The material collected by the French scientists artists and officers-surveyors was processed and published in France between 1831 and 1838 in four volumes and a large Atlas by the Natural Sciences Section of the Expedition as well as three large-format volumes prepared by the Architecture and Sculpture Section. These include accounts of the journeys scores of maps and a vast array of data regarding the conditions in the region as well as the state of ancient and more recent remains. Pride of place among the French achievements was the Map of the Moreas 1832. Despite its success wealth of material and enormous value for science and for the country the work of the French Scientific Expedition has not been given the recognition it deserves and has remained somewhat hidden from the view of the wider public.

The current edition includes original contributions by over 25 Greek and French researchers from different fields all with expertise on the Peloponnese and aims at giving a wider readership the opportunity to learn more about the illustrative and cartographic documentation various previously unpublished maps and other accounts by members of the Expedition. It consists of three parts which correspond to the Natural Sciences Section Part I printed the Architecture & Sculpture Section and the Archaeology Section Part II forthcoming Botany and Zoology Section Part III forthcoming of the Expedition. All parts include numerous illustrations of exquisite artistry created by the scientists and artists of the Expedition. Part I consists of 66 facsimile sheets of maps engravings and drawings selected from French originals and an accompanying book with critical essays.
Melissa paperback

20107445Franz Steiner Verlag. 2010. Hardcover. Fine in No Dust Jacket dust jacket. Historia - Einzelschriften 217; 236 pages; English summary: The contrast between monarchical and republican constitution is one of the key factors of political processes and discourses in ancient communities. However the sharp dichotomy between republic and monarchy at least according to present published research seems to more closely back the needs of those groups backing Republican orders than was actually the case in reality. The aim of this volume is to develop an interpretive model that takes the openness of dynamics and development of such processes seriously. It is not enough to purely reconstruct historical causalities. Instead individual examples from Greek and Roman history are used to study the risk posed by the respective populations' steps toward stabilization in close connection with their potential for political transformation. German text. . 3515097821 . Dustjacket has minor edgewear with 1 tiny tear.; 1.26 x 8.43 x 5.67 Inches; 352 pages; With an examination into Xenophon's longer historical works the "Hellenica" and the "Anabasis" Dillery considers how far these texts reflect the Greek intellectual world of the fourth and fifth centuries B. C. rather than focusing on the traditional question of how accurate they are as histories. Through the analysis of the complete corpus of Xenophon's work and the writings of his contemporaries Xenophon is shown to be very much a man of his times concerned with topical issues ranging from panhellenism and utopia to how far the gods controlled human history. . 041509139X .
