==============================================================

The shipping cost estimated by the system covers books weighing up to 750 gr.; a surcharge depending on the actual weight and destination applies for heavier books.

MIET paperback

Includes letter and postcard from author tipped in. Lower corners bumped.; 324 pages; Thucydides Pericles and the Idea of Athens in the Peloponnesian War is the first comprehensive study of Thucydides' presentation of Pericles' radical redefinition of the city of Athens during the Peloponnesian War. Martha Taylor argues that Thucydides subtly critiques Pericles' vision of Athens as a city divorced from the territory of Attica and focused instead on the sea and the empire. Thucydides shows that Pericles' reconceputalization of the city led the Athenians both to Melos and to Sicily. Toward the end of his work Thucydides demonstrates that flexible thinking about the city exacerbated the Athenians' civil war. Providing a thorough critique and analysis of Thucydides' neglected book 8 Taylor shows that Thucydides praises political compromise centered around the traditional city in Attica. In doing so he implicitly censures both Pericles and the Athenian imperial project itself.; Signed by Author . 0521765935 . Cambridge University Press hardcover

Mnemosyne Bibliotheca Classica Batava : Supplementum; 1 x 9.7 x 6.3 Inches; 301 pages; This is a book about the law and life of Rome—in which contributors respond to John Crook's injunction to 'think like lawyers' by ranging as far as ancient Greece ancient Persia and modern Denmark to expound their themes and draw comparisons. An opening section focuses on Civil Law more or less as conventionally conceived with chapters on the peculium on municipal law at Irni in Roman Spain on advisers of Roman provincial governors and on violent crime. Roman perceptions of the physical and human worlds are the focus of a second section and comparisons between Greek Roman and modern ways of thinking about law and government come into the third section. In the final section contributors argue the history of law and life from refractions of real and imagined Rome. . 9004124748 . Brill Academic Publishers hardcover

Underlining in pencil to a few pages.; Oxford Classical Monographs; 304 pages; This book traces the development of the Theseus myth and its importance for Athens. Mills examines all extant tragedies in which Theseus appear in order to assess the significance of his role as mythological representative of Athenian greatness. She argues that the Theseus of most Athenian tragedy is carefully drawn to exemplify the idealized image of the Athenian "national character" that was prevalent in the age of the empire. . 0198150636 . 2006044235Oxford: Archaeopress 2006 Book. New. Soft cover. First Thus. On August 2nd 1877 the English explorer and archaeologist James Theodore Bent married an extraordinary Irishwoman Mabel Virginia Anna Hall-Dare .and within a few months they had embarked on their pattern of annual travels that continued until his early death in 1897. Their trips began fairly close to home visiting northern Italy but by 1883 they were in the Eastern Mediterranean in modern Greece and Turkey searching out the antiquities landscapes and lifestyles of a region that was to captivate them for the next fifteen years. Their researches led to a number of highly regarded monographs papers and articles such as Theodores 'The Cyclades or Life Among the Insular Greeks' 1885 and the many publications of their various discoveries in locations such as Rugged Cilicia the island of Thassos and elsewhere that were to place the couple securely amongst the foremost British travellers of the latter half of the 19th century. The publication therefore of Mabel Bents personal notebooks from the archive of the Joint Library of the Hellenic and Roman Societies London represents the discovery of a lost and notable milestone for scholars and travel enthusiasts of all kinds. This series of volumes begins with Mabels account of the couples adventures around the Aegean and beyond extracted from her fifteen-year sequence of notebooks and presented chronologically. Specifically we follow Mabel and Theodore to the Greek mainland and the islands known now as the Cyclades and the Dodecanese as well as the northern Aegean islands; their journeys along the Turkish littoral lead them from bustling Istanbul to provincial Mersin in the far south-west.363p. illus maps index. 2010171128
In English. Soft cover 24 cm XXI309 pp. net weight 580 gr.

The author examines ancient Athenian laws and customary practices that shaped the lives of widows and orphans in classical Athenian society taking evidence mainly from the Attic orators. The book has two main parts: I: The Athenian Widow in Law and Society; & II: Orphans in Classical Athens. Among the main issues discussed in part one are the impact of the cycle of external and internal wars and the other demographic factors on family life and structure some of the laws and regulations about widows and orphans and the nature of the archon's protection for widows and orphans in the society; also the socio-legal implications of widowhood against the background of the widow's status in the οἶκος of her deceased husband and her general maintenance and support. One of the two categories of women in classical Athens who together with male minor orphans enjoyed special legal protection was that of the pregnant widow. Thus part one discusses also the status of the pregnant widow in the society and attempts to interpret the law cited in section 75 of Demosthenes' speech 43 Against Makaratus in Regard to the Estate of Hagnias to establish how the pregnant widow stood apart from her ordinary widow or woman counterpart in the eyes of the law and society. The final chapter of part one examines the widow's rights to property vis a vis women's property rights in Athenian society. // For a detailed review see: http://bmcr.brynmawr.edu/2012/2012-02-22.html.

CONTENTS:

INTRODUCTION - SOURCES

PART ONE: THE ATHENIAN WIDOW IN LAW AND SOCIETY

Chapter 1 - Demography Solon and Administration of Justice in the Athenian Family: 1. 2008148557
Bilingual greek-english OR greek-french edition; hard cover 25X23 cm 180 pp. ill. Thanks to the variety of shapes and decorated surfaces found in vases the art of pottery developed a more extensive repertoire of subjects related to the sea than any other art form. The forty-two characteristic examples of marine iconography included in this catalogue come mainly from the collections of the Louvre though also from those of other museums. They are divided into four groups: marine fauna and seafaring the deities of the deep the voyages of gods and heroes who crisscrossed the ocean and finally the miraculous birth of the goddess who emerged from the waves Aphrodite born from the foam. The variety and aesthetic quality of marine scenes in vase-painting reveal once more the importance of the sea to Greek civilization.

==============================================================

IMPORTANT:

The shipping cost estimated by the system covers books weighing up to 750 gr.; a surcharge depending on the actual weight and destination applies for heavier books. The systematic excavation of the site was part of the Kopais Project that started in 1994 and is still in progress in order to establish a chronological sequence for the development of the cave and the identification of economical models in diverse periods. Exceptional stratigraphical data inside the cave and dozens of C14 dates have led to the succession of distinct cultural phases dated from the Middle/ Early Upper Palaeolithic to the Middle Helladic 2nd mill B.C. when the cave was abandoned. The cave is of crucial importance for the study of the Mesolithic/ Early Neolithic interface. The Middle and Late Neolithic occupations are represented by numerous symbolic objects such as hundreds of figurines indicating the important role of the cave in ritual activities.
