C. the Aitolian koinon a federation of mountain cantons in west central Greece expanded to incorporate many of the neighboring lands and peoples lying between the Adriatic and Aegean Seas. This new political configuration contributed to the development of modern systems of federal democracy based on proportional representation. Despite these institutional advances the Aitolians and their polity are reviled in the ancient historical tradition which views them as backward semi-barbarous brigands. The Politics of Plunder is the first English-language book in over a century to examine the political history of the Aitolian koinon in its era of expansion. Joseph Scholten presents a chronological reconstruction of the koinon's course of expansion synthesizing a number of recent studies covering Aitolian topography epigraphy and institutional development that help to compensate for deficiencies in the ancient narrative record. His study is the first to ask how a people and a polity so detested by their contemporaries succeeded in making such fundamental contributions to their regional political culture. Scholten's careful investigation charts a middle course that neither whitewashes the Aitolians nor credulously accepts the biased ancient tradition. This balanced approach provides a much-needed fresh perspective on the Aitolians and their koinon. Discussing the history of the ancient Aegean Greek world and the political economic and social history of the Hellenistic Era this book will interest anyone concerned with those subjects or fascinated by the development of ancient Greek political institutions and theories particularly federalism.; Hellenistic Culture and Society; 2.72 x 9.31 x 7.94 Inches; 339 pages . 0520201876 . 199336666Oxford University Press. 1993. Hardcover. Near Fine in Very Good dust jacket. Scholar's name to ffep D. Gerber. Very light shelfwear to book and DJ.; 0.8 x 9.36 x 6.38 Inches; 220 pages; Tales of archaic Greek city foundations continue to be told and retold long after the colonies themselves were settled and this book explores how the ancient Greeks constructed their memory of founding new cities overseas. Greek stories about colonizing Sicily or the Black Sea in the seventh century B.C.E. are no more transparent no less culturally constructed than nineteenth-century British tales of empire in India or Africa; they are every bit as much about power language and cultural appropriation. This book brings anthropological and literary theory to bear on the narratives that later Greeks tell about founding colonies and the processes through which the colonized are assimilated into the familiar story-lines metaphors and rituals of the colonizers. The distinctiveness and the universality of the Greek colonial representations are explored through explicit comparison with later European narratives of new world settlement. . 0195083997 . Soft cover 24 cm 244 pp.

The conversion of a small emirate in the powerful Ottoman Empire which succeeded that of Byzantium and was in close contact with the western world for many centuries is a phenomenon with multiple interpretations. The theories of the great historian Kuprulu and Wittek formed both in the 1930's have recently changed. Recent discoveries and studies have caused numerous debates with new arguments and gave additional explanations. The dervish role becomes more important than was thought and the discovery of coins casts new light on the humble beginnings of Turk emirs of the 14th century while the archival material clarified many of the newer institutions of the Ottoman Empire.

CONTENTS:

VASSILIS DEMETRIADES Some Thoughts on the Origins of the Devsirme

FERIDUN EMECEN Ottoman Policy of Conquest of the Turcoman Principalities of Western Anatolia with Special Reference to Sarukhan Beyligi

ALDO GALLOTTA Il "mito oguzo" e le origine dello stato ottomano: Una riconsiderazione

GYORGY HAZAI La place du XIVe siecle dans l'evolution de la langue turque

COLIN IMBER The Legend of Osman Gazi

HALIL INALCIK Osman Ghazi's Siege of Nicaea and the Battle of Bapheus

JACQUES LEFORT Tableau de la Bithynie au XIIIe siecle

ANTHONY LUTTRELL Latin Responses to Ottoman Expansion before 1389

IRENE MELIKOFF L'origine sociale des premiers Ottomans

AHMET YASAR OCAK Les milieux soufis dans les territoires du beylicat ottoman et le probleme des 'Abdalan-i Rum' 1300-1389

NICOLAS OIKONOMIDES The Turks in Europe 1305-1313 and the Serbs in Asia Minor 1313

STEPHEN W.
