"... it is a description of sixteen of the larger medieval fortresses of the Peloponnese, occupied by the Venetians during the period 1685-1715, and drawn by their engineers around the year 1700." Based on the discovery of a portfolio of the plans disceoverd in Venice in 1938. "This book is an attempt to gather together the historical resources relative to the castles figuring in the collection, and to present the results of my archaeological investigation , illustrated by early traveller's descriptions, by photographs of my own .... I have arranged the fortresses in the order as they fell to the armies of the Holy League in the campaigns of 1685-1792, ... In each chapter the fortress' history is recapitulated from its earliest known beginnings to its last military engagement, followed by an analysis of its architecture." Masterly, mammoth and not yet superseded this is a rare and classic work covering aspects of Greek history little studied or appreciated. 274p + XXXX plates. L'anno seguente Johannes morì e le lastre rimanenti vennero disperse e acquistate dai rivali Frederick De Wit, Schenk e Valk. La casa editrice chiuse definitivamente nel 1695.. .

New English Original bdg. HC. 4to. (31 x 22 cm). In English. 544 p., ills. Ottoman Chrysochou (Mid-19th century). This volume presents the thirteen 19th-century fiscal censuses of the district of Hrisofi (Chrysochou) on the north-western side of Cyprus and joins the other two editions containing the censuses of the neighbouring kazas of Kouklia and Paphos released in 2015 and 2016 respectively. It covers the period from 1825 to 1848. The sources, although concerning taxation, trace the demographic and social status of the population in the mid-19th century, providing opportunities for further comparisons with sources of this type, both older and newer. Research fields can therefore be extended to other periods too, and can be directed at exploring issues that explain conversions to Islam, population movements, etc. The fiscal registers we examined reveal the picture that emerges from official administrative data of the Ottoman Empire, a picture that is no different from that described by Western travellers who visited the island, inspired by an interest in its glorious past in antiquity.

The author records folk life and village society in his hometown during the period 1940-1980. He describes the material life (organization of production, survival mechanisms of residents, the village market, technical, traditional occupations) and the forms of cooperation and mutual assistance between the villagers. His local knowledge and personal experience of village life helped him to assemble much primary folklore material and record it with the help of informants and villager, providing typical examples of collective memory, showing links to the place of origin and preservation of the rich functional and ritual life of the community.188p. illus, bibligraphy. {3 copies found in WorldCat] Book
